Kelvin Davis is set to become only the second goalkeeper in Saints’ 130-year history to make 300 appearances for the club.

The 38-year-old is due to reach the incredible milestone in Saturday’s trip to Leicester City, as he joins an exclusive group of players.

No keeper in the post-war era has ever made 300 appearances for Saints, with Tom Allen the only one to do so in the club’s entire history.

Allen played 327 times, from 1920 to 1928, and also holds a club record for a run of 845 minutes without conceding a goal.

Club captain Davis, who arrived at St Mary’s in 2006 from Sunderland, will become the 27th person to have ever hit the 300-mark for Saints.

“I don’t really know why that’s become such an important goal for me,” he told the Daily Echo earlier this season.

“I suppose it’s because it was the next goal and, obviously, getting back in the team and putting on the shirt and playing for the club is something I really look forward to doing, and I prepare to do that every day.”

Davis is set to bring up his triple-ton against a club managed by one of his former bosses, Nigel Pearson.

Pearson had a three-month spell in charge of Saints at the end of the 2007/08 campaign, helping them to a dramatic survival in the Championship.

The 51-year-old is currently on course to mastermind another improbable escape, this time with the Foxes, and Davis fondly remembers the impact that he had at St Mary’s.

“For me, what stood out when he came here is that he was on his own and took control of the whole club, the whole squad, and managed to keep us up,” he said.“There was an opportunity at the time to keep him here and we didn’t, and I’ve always said that he was a fantastic manager for us.

“You can see that he’s a good leader, very well organised with good staff around him.

“The time here made him stronger and we went on to achieve in a difficult time, but his remit in coming here was to help keep us up, and it’s a shame we didn’t see more of him.

“It’s no surprise that he’s gone to Leicester and done the work that he’s done there, looking as though he’s turned it around at that club.”
