Ronald Koeman reflected on a great day as he signed a natural goalscorer and saw his team secure a comfortable win over West Brom.

Koeman landed his number one transfer window target, striker Charlie Austin, in a £4m deal.

He then watched his side complete a second win in a matter of days as they defeated the Baggies 3-0 at St Mary’s to move back into the top half of the table.

Though goals were not hard to come by in this game, they have proved tricky for Saints in recent times, and Koeman believes the addition of Austin can change that.

He said: “I hope (he will bring) goals because that’s the reason why he was and is our target for the transfer window.

“I think we need a player like him.

“His numbers of goals everybody knows and still he is 26 and it is good to have him in now because that’s good for the adaptation and to see now what is his physical state at the moment because he is coming out of a hamstring injury.

“It gives more competition and what we try to do always is make the squad stronger and stronger.

“Signing that kind of players is very positive.”

Saints put in a superb display to defeat West Brom, and in truth ended up winning with a bit to spare.

“It was a comfortable win,” admitted Koeman.

“We know how difficult it is to beat West Brom, but we had really that quality to score after two minutes about a great free kick of Prowsey then it’s different.

Daily Echo:

“Then you are 1-0 up and they have to do a little bit more or maybe a little bit different, “We had total control in the game.

“Of course the second one killed a little bit the game, the penalty, but I think we had a very good team performance.

“They didn’t create a lot of chances and we had some good chances to score the third early on.

“A very good final result 2-0, the first time we scored against them and well deserved against them.”
