Former Saints boss Dave Merrington has questioned the club’s ambition as Ronald Koeman’s move to Everton inches ever closer.

The Dutchman has opened negotiations with the club who have finished the last two Premier League seasons in 11th place.

Koeman, though he has always said he is happy to see out the final year of his St Mary’s contract, could have his head swayed by a huge transfer budget at Goodison Park.

“I’m surprised and a bit disappointed,” said Merrington, who was Saints’ manager in the 1995/96 Premier League season.

“I have always thought Ronald Koeman would see out his contract at the club. I have always got the impression he would fulfil his final year.

“It will be very disappointing news for the fans.

“They saw one manager (Mauricio Pochettino) leaving two years ago, and now another one could be going.

“The fans will be asking how has that happened?

“Have both managers left because they couldn’t see the club going forward to the next level?

“The club need to start showing more ambition.”
