ORIOL Romeu has been flattered by Claude Puel's belief that he warrants a call-up to the Spain national team - but isn't worried if he goes ignored by manager Julen Lopetegui.

Romeu's form for Saints this term has drawn wide acclaim, with Puel especially passionate in his praise for the defensive midfielder.

On more than one occasion the St Mary's chief has stated that the 25-year-old should be considered by Lopetegui for a call-up.

However, Romeu insists that, while achieving his Spanish "dream" would be "huge", he is just focused on continuing arguably the best form of his career to date.

"It's something nice to hear," he said, when asked about Puel's comment. "I feel proud because he thought I can get there.

"But I don't lose sleep over it. I'm happy as I am. I'm happy doing the job I am.

"I enjoy just going out there, but if that comes I will be happy and that will because of the amazing job we are doing here.

"If it comes I will be happy, but if its doesn't I will keep doing the same."

Romeu is often left behind while the rest of the Saints squad head on international duty.

The former Chelsea man, who has played for Spain at youth levels, has dreamed of doing the same as his team-mates since he was a youngster.

"It's something we all want to achieve once," he said. "It's one of our dreams since we were young.

"It would be a huge thing to be called up and to play for the national."

Romeu watched on as Manchester United's Ander Herrera made his Spain debut in the 2-2 draw with England last week.

Herrera's first call-up was reassuring news to the Saints man. "It's always good to see Premier League players linked with the national team because the coaches are giving them a chance," he said.

"And now with a young coach, who knows, all the players [that haven't played] are getting a chance.

"It is those who are playing the best level, not because someone has a big name - the one's that deserve to go are being called up."

Romeu will need to keep up his form for Saints until March (when the next international games are) if he is to be picked for Spain.
