FORMER Spitfire Connor Essam came back to haunt Eastleigh as Dover Athletic went outright top of the Vanarama National League this afternoon.
Having taken seven points from their previous four games, the Spitfires were knocked back 2-0 at Crabble.
On-loan Tranmere striker James Alabi plunged the Spitfires into 32nd-minute arrears and Dover ’keeper Mitch Walker protected that lead with a low stop from Ben Williamson.
Although Eastleigh managed to keep their former striker Ryan Bird quiet, it was another ex-Spitfire, Essam, who sealed Dover’s win, smashing home after his initial effort had been saved.
Defeat leaves Eastleigh 17th with a home game against lowly Barrow beckoning next Saturday.
