It was a fairly drab second half. Chelsea weren't good at all and Saints were slow to show any ambition to attack.
Eventually, Mauricio Pellegrino brought on Sofiane Boufal and Charlie Austin, but it didn't yield an equaliser.
In the end, it was Marcos Alonso's goal that was the difference here. The left wing-back curled in a free-kick on the cusp of half-time.
Saints have now won once in nine games and are sitting precariously just above the bottom three.
