Ryan Bertrand will miss Saints' crucial match against Fulham through suspension.
The defender picked up a yellow card during the Watford game on Saturday which was his fifth of the season.
Saints captain Bertrand has played every minute of the opening 12 fixtures in the Premier League campaign so far.
But his absence for the away trip to Fulham after the international break means that Matt Targett could make his first start of the season.
Targett knows Craven Cottage well from his six-month loan spell with Slovisa Jokanovic's side last year.
The defender helped them gain promotion to the Premier League when he signed for them in January, but returned to Saints in the summer in a bid to become a regular in Mark Hughes' team.
However, with Bertrand being made captain on a permanent basis, Targett has struggled for game time.
