MICHAEL Obafemi is itching to get his first international cap with the Republic of Ireland.
The youngster was called up by Martin O’Neill to a provisional 36-man squad for the upcoming games against Northern Ireland and Denmark.
Obafemi then made O’Neill’s final 23 after fellow Saints striker Shane Long pulled out of the squad with an ankle injury and he is now keen to make his debut for Ireland.
18-year-old Obafemi said: “I’m looking forward to going away with Ireland now and possibly making my first international cap.”
It’s been a remarkable rise to the first team for Obafemi after he took Manolo Gabbiadini’s place in the matchday squad for the game against Manchester City.
And despite only making two substitute appearances this season, he doesn’t think Saints’ league position is a fair reflection on the quality they possess.
“We all know that we need a change of form in the next run of games, so hopefully we get that,” Obafemi added.
“If we carry on working hard we know that it will change.
“We are a good side and we shouldn’t be where we are at the moment.”
