Burley praise for 'strong' Saints

6:51am Monday 21st January 2008

George Burley hopes Saints have finally found some consistency after their draw at Plymouth made it five away games without defeat.

In a season where inconsistency has been rife at Saints, it's a comforting statistic - even if four of the games have only been draws.

The only win was right at the start of that away run - a 2-1 success at Leicester at the beginning of December.

Saints took the lead at Home Park but were pegged back by Paul Sturrock's side just after half time in tough conditions on a heavy pitch.

Burley said: "I knew we had to be strong and weather the storm, but that's five away games undefeated and we're looking a lot stronger.

"It was a battling point.

"It was a game where conditions were hard - I never thought it was going to be a classic.

"We started brightly and moved the ball in those conditions very well but were later put under a lot of pressure by Plymouth.

"We had to roll our sleeves up second half against two big strikers who were a handful for our two centre halves."

Burley made a couple of changes in defence with fit-again Darren Powell replacing Wayne Thomas at centre half and Alexander Ostlund starting his first game since October with Jermaine Wright playing in the centre of midfield to try and restore some balance to the side.

"I didn't think we passed it particularly well second half but you've got to keep working at it," said Burley.

That's one way to use stats, another way is to point out that Saints have won just ONE game in the last SIX. Scoring just 5 goals, conceding 8 and that puts us 18th in the Championship current form table.

The only stat in this league we are top of is the fewest number of yellow cards. Which doesn't prove to me we are disciplined, it proves we are soft.

I note in today's Echo that asbos are to be issued for illegal grazing by donkeys in Southampton. With the club's finances in such a precarious state, George Burley will have to ensure that his donkeys only do their grazing at Staplewood, because he can't afford to pay a fine.

Officially the funniest thing ever said by a Portsmouth supporter, which isn't saying much.

Talking of toothache, did anybody else notice that, whilst watching Chris Kamara commentate on the Skate game on Saturday for Sky Sports, the supporters behind him (about 200 of them) only had about 8 teeth between them??

Maybe if they weren't all in-breds......

I did notice that, also the crowd size appeared to be doubled due to the fact each Pompey fan had either a probation officer, psychiatric nurse or prison guard accompanying them.

Just as well that do not give asbos for inter-breading aint it Captain Pugwash, or should l say six-fingers.
You musy be quite envious with all the land that we have here in Southampton.
Not a lot going in pompey by all accounts.
Certainly not enougth for a new stadium and training facilities is there Pugwash.

Pleased to see that both Kate and Sniper both watched the South Coast's only Premier League side in action, if only on TV. It must be a treat to see quality football.
Sorry about your toothache Kate, it must be where you have been grinding them with frustration at being promised a lot, football-wise, and being delivered nothing.
Must advise Sniper that the section of the crowd he saw was a group of young offenders, rounded up with the feral donkeys, and sent, under guard, as part of a re-education process!

Was actually watching Matt Le Tissier on Soccer Saturday, when unfortunately, Chris Kamara and Fratton Park were shoved onto the screen without even a warning by Sky. They give warnings about flash photography, you'd think there would be a warning about "incredibly ugly and offensive portsmouth supporters" to give me time to leave the room.

Are the feral donkeys you speak of, Harry's latest £5m signing? (£1m to the sanctuary, £4m to "Sandbanks Retirement Home Ltd")

Its quite funny really when you consider that Saints have been on TV more this season than pompey.
What is more funny is that you can guarantee that MOTD will always have pompey as their last game.
And it last for about 90 seconds.
Still they aint very entertaining are they, looks like they will have to wait another eight games before they score at home again.
BORING BORING pompey!zzzzzz

Following on from the merry japes and sniping in the posts above, i want to comment on the story.

George Burley is right; Saints have found some consistency so all credit to you George.

Only trouble is we are consistently mediocre in all areas, and that included management and board.

Until such time as this is sorted, I will not be paying my money, hard earned because mediocrity is not tolerated in the work I do, to watch under-performance on the pitch that seems to be an acceptable standard for Mr B and his employers.

I guess there are many others with a similar viewpoint.

For Christmas I bought my cat a clockwork mouse. While it provided entertainment for both cat and family, I found that it has been far easier to wind up Kate, Princy Boy, Snipe etc than it was the mouse, and provided even greater entertainment.
Sadly, I cant wind up the regular correspondent from Romsey, as it would appear that he has been overwound and his spring has broken!

I can pretty much say now that I'm completley fed up with Burley 'looking on the bright side' all the time. It's about time he stands up and admits our game just simply isn't good enough, border line cr*p, with some desperate whip cracking needed, pronto. I would feel much better if he recognised the substandard football I am paying good money to see. Burley quotes include - "The balance in the midfield today was not right and to be honest Scunthorpe played so much better than us." I translate this to - "I played players our of position to completely shag the balance of our team, we we're awfull, mistakes were made." another one includes ""Overall I felt the conditions were always going to play a part and it was never going to be a classic but that's five unbeaten for us away from home now and that is pleasing." which I translate to - "Once again, we we're dominated in midfield and struggled against a smaller club, Let's think about the good point away from home and forget the standard of football....again"
