Lawrie McMenemy will play a pivotal role in appointing George Burley's successor as Saints manager.

The football board director's vast experience in the game has been largely ignored since his return to Saints last summer but he will be turned to in the club's hour of need.

McMenemy, who guided Saints to the FA Cup in 1976, is the only man currently at the club with first hand football experience.

He will, along with acting chief executive Lee Hoos and chairman Leon Crouch, be involved in drawing up a shortlist of candidates to succeed Burley, who will be formally unveiled as Scotland's new boss in Glasgow today or tomorrow.

Those three Saints directors will then be involved in the interview process with their recommendations going before the football board and PLC board.
