MANAGER Richard Hill fumed at Eastleigh's defensive performance in their 4-4 draw at Boreham Wood on Wednesday evening.

Erico Sousa’s stoppage-time penalty saw the Spitfires and Boreham Wood share the points in an eight-goal National League thriller.

Sousa’s spot-kick in the eighth minute of added time clinched a dramatic draw for the hosts at Meadow Park on a night when they trailed 2-0, led 3-2 and looked to have lost it at 4-3.

First half goals from Jake Taylor and Enzio Boldewijn appeared to have put Eastleigh in the driving seat.

However, Sousa dragged the hosts back into it within three minutes of the restart and they were level six minutes later through Oscar Rutherford’s own goal.

Tyrone Marsh saw a 59th-minute penalty saved by Joe McDonnell and although Matt Robinson fired the home side in front with 24 minutes remaining, Paul McCallum made it 3-3 before substitute Malachi Dotse put Eastleigh 4-3 ahead with a minute remaining.

Sousa kept his nerve when it mattered to ensure Boreham Wood finished with a point to show for their efforts.

Speaking to the club's media after the game, Hill said: “I’m sick of eight-goal thrillers. I would have been happy with a 0-0 or a 1-0 win.

“We cut our own throats. Defensively it is not good enough. It is not acceptable. We panicked.

"We controlled the game in the first half, but we were a bag of nerves in the second half.

“We gave the ball away to easily for the first goal and we don’t close them down for their second.

“It was different personnel but the same old story. I’ve said that a lot of times.

“But there was still some good play in there. Our third goal is about as good as you will see this season.

“We knew what was going to happen in the second half. I prepared the lads during the break, but things just went a bit soft.

“At half time I told them to stick the ball behind them if nothing was on. But it was the same old story, there you go.”
