MANAGER Russell Martin insisted Southampton's opening goal against Coventry City should be credited to Che Adams rather than Kyle Walker-Peters.

The forward diverted Walker-Peters' long-range strike, which looked to be heading off target, past goalkeeper Bradley Collins with his arm.

Adams wheeled away in celebration after the ball hit the net but it is Walker-Peters who has been widely credited with the goal.

The Scotland international took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to claim the goal, writing: "Unbelievable assist Kyle Walker-Peters."

The fullback responded: "Definitely MY goal." Asked who claimed the goal in the dressing room, Martin said: “It’s Che’s goal, unfortunately for Kyle.

"Kyle did brilliantly. He and Breezy were great. They switched positions a couple of times. They were excellent.

"Che was in the right place at the right time. He started the game slowly but he really grew into it.

“He took a lot of responsibility and stole the ball for us. I said to the guys ‘You need to live there all the time now.’

“We need that desire and hunger to win all the time. I think if we do that it will be a strong end to the season."

James Bree shared a similar sentiment, adding: "Che was claiming it to be fair. I didn’t see much of it so I’m going to have to say it was Che’s goal."

Adams' double has taken his Championship total for the season up to 13, seven behind Adam Armstrong and seven more than third-place Ryan Fraser and Sam Edozie.

The 27 year old's future at Southampton remains uncertain as he enters the final few months of his contract.

Adams has been linked with a free transfer move to Premier League Wolves in the summer. He was offered a new contract by Southampton but has not signed new terms as of yet.
