SAINTS fullback Ryan Manning was unhappy about being left out against Coventry but "respected" the decision, Russell Martin insisted.

The Irish international was omitted from Southampton's squad for their 2-1 win over the Sky Blues on Tuesday evening.

Jan Bednarek was the only defender named on the bench, with the versatile Shea Charles also included for additional cover.

Saints started with James Bree and Kyle Walker-Peters at fullback, while Jack Stephens, who has featured recently at left-back, started at centre-half.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Martin explained he wanted to include as many attacking players in the squad as possible.

Asked why Manning was omitted, the boss said: "We played the two fullbacks and we wanted the most attacking bench we could have.

"I thought Shea Charles would come on at some point because of the way they play, and he did. Shea has been unfortunate to lose out on being in the squad for the last couple of games

"He took it really well. The same with Ryan. Of course, they are not happy to be out of the squad. I spoke to Ryan yesterday.

"He doesn't agree or like the decision but he respects it because we have a brilliant relationship. We have pretty much worked together for three years now. He knows me inside out and I know him inside out.

"It wasn't to do with anything other than I wanted as many attacking options on the bench. Shea was there to come on and protect us with the double six, which is how we ended up.

"We felt the game might need that at some point. This time it worked but Saturday might be different again. We will have to wait and see."

Manning joined Southampton on a free transfer in the summer, following manager Martin from Swansea City.

The 27 year old has made 32 Championship appearances this season, his last coming in their 4-2 win over Sunderland.
