PLANS for a new stadium for Portsmouth FC seem to have faltered once again.
The club had been planning to build a 36,000-seater stadium on Horsea Island on the outskirts of the city.
However the scheme was due to be funded by housing built on the site. As the financial downturn continues, the club have been told they would have to replace housing with shops - and this would be likely to prompt a public inquiry into the development.
As a result the stadium - which was due to be open in 2011 - looks increasingly unlikely to be built.
The Horsea Island plan was announced after plans for another 36,000 seater stadium at The Hard near the city centre were shelved.
The official reason for that plan being cancelled was the news that the Royal Navy was building two super-carriers.
Prior to that scheme Pompey had planned to redevelop Fratton Park into a 28,000 seater stadium and there had also been plans to build in the Farlington area of the city, although those were scuppered by migrating Brent geese.
