Adam Lallana was delighted with his first league goal for virtually a year – but couldn’t hide his disappointment that Saints’ wait for a first three points of the season goes on.

The Saints midfielder produced a terrific near post finish to score his first league strike at Charlton.

The goal came just two days shy of a year since his previous league goal in a 4-1 loss at QPR in a Championship encounter.

Lallana has netted twice in the Carling Cup this season but admitted that is little consolation – and nor was a point when he desperately wanted more from the trip to The Valley.

He said: “It might be a good point come the end of the season but we’re disappointed.

“We came in at half time 1-0 up and wanted a good start to the second half.

“First five minutes we put them under pressure and could have made it two with a couple of half chances.

“But we conceded a sloppy goal and for the next 20 minutes it was backs against the walls.

“A point was probably a fair result but we’re disappointed because we need that first three points to give us that boost.

“It was there for the taking second half and we thought we’d soak up pressure and get chances on the break.

“When they got the goal so early it made it hard for us.

“Their fans were behind them and it was about hanging on to the point.

“At the end we built a bit of pressure with a couple of corners and free kicks and had a couple of good shouts for a penalty which never went our way.”

Lallana added: “It’s easy to say the rub of the green isn’t on our side, but it’s not.

“I’m sure the first win is around the corner because we’re becoming stronger as a team – you’ve just got to look at the people we had on the bench. It was a lot stronger than it had been.”
