PAUL Wotton insists Saints will take nothing for granted when they face Torquay tonight.

Saints could fall into the trap of thinking a win over the team second bottom of the Football League is all but a formality following on the back of a convincing 4-1 drubbing of Gillingham.

But Wotton believes there will be no complacency at Saints who know a Wembley final awaits at the end of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

He said: “Undoubtedly we will be favourites but that can mean nothing in cup games so we will be taking nothing for granted at all.

“We beat Gillingham on Saturday which was great but it’s irrelevant tonight – we’re playing Torquay and that’s who we have to beat.

“Torquay is just up the road from where I’m from, Plymouth.

“They haven’t had a great start to their time back in the Football League but I know Paul Buckle a little bit and they play some decent stuff.

“They’ll be hard working and organised and some of their players will enjoy playing at St Mary’s.

“I know a few of their players and they’ve already played at places like this but it’s a great stadium to go to and we’re looking forward to the tie.

“I’ve seen Torquay play a few times and they try and play football the right way so it will be a decent game.

“They will fancy their chances and we will fancy ours.”

Coming from Plymouth himself Wotton understands the local rivalries down that way but is relishing the clash with West Country minnows Exeter more than the Torquay game.

“Exeter are our big rivals and Plymouth-Torquay is not as fierce as that,” he explained.

“I’ll probably get a few boos – but as long as they’re not from the home punters that’s OK.”

He added: “The final’s played at Wembley and what a great day out that would be.

“We’re under no illusions it will be hard work to get there but we’re in the competition so we want to win it.

“We’ve all played enough cup games to know that old cliché ‘one game at a time’ is all you can do.

“Tonight Torquay are our opponents and if we want to win the competition beating them is the first step.”

Wotton also praised the Saints support who again look likely to turn out in force.

“The support has been unbelievable,”

he said.

“Even last season when, let’s be honest, there was not a lot to shout about they were great.

“This year the fans up at Carlisle were unbelievable and it’s really appreciated by everyone in the changing room.

“They really back their team and love their football club and you can see why because it’s a terrific football club.”
