Hampshire batsmen Michael Lumb and Michael Carberry rewrote the record books against defending champions Durham.
The left-handers showed the benefits of a brief sabbatical, putting on a record-breaking 314 for the second wicket before Hampshire closed on 373-5 at Basingstoke.
Lumb made 158 and Carberry cracked 162 in front of a 1,600-plus May’s Bounty crowd on the opening day of Hampshire's latest LV= County Championship match.
Their partnership was the highest ever in a first-class match at Basingstoke and only seven short of Hampshire's all-time second wicket record.
