Saints chasing England Under-19 star

Matt Phillips Matt Phillips

SAINTS could be turning their attentions to Wycombe Wanderers starlet Matt Phillips as Alan Pardew tries to bring in fresh width.

The Saints manager has made no secret of the fact that he is keen to strengthen out wide following the loss of last season’s two loanees Michail Antonio and Papa Waigo.

Widemen Jason Puncheon (ankle) and Adam Lallana (knee) have also missed the last few pre-season friendlies due to injury.

That leaves Saints with Lee Holmes and 16-year-old Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as predominently wide options.

It is believed Saints had two scouts present to see Phillips score on his first pre-season outing for the League Two club against Farnborough last weekend.

The 19-year-old had made a belated entry to pre season after being involved with the England Under-19 squad in their recent European Championship campaign.

Hope its true This would be progress if we attract this level of player to SMS Could he be the guy who looked like Amtonio at Eastleigh on Monday

I'd like to see Holmes getting a run in the side, he looked quality when he first arrived before getting injured. I like the way Pardew is looking down the leagues for quality players, if only we went down that route a few seasons ago when we were wasting money on dubious imports.

To be honest never heard of him before so unsure as to his quality/ability. Football rumours say we had a £500,000 bid for Antonio turned down. Hope we get a couple in soon. F5 button is getting worn out!

Antonio is not worth more than £300,000 tops IMO. This sounds a good option as he has talent, lets hope he can sign and progress.

This is exactley the type of player we need to aquire. Young, keen and will push Spider and Hammo all the way. Still think Pitman would be perfect back up to Rickeeeeeeeeeeee

Yep, like the sound of this guy. I'd be well happy with Antonio for £500k though. He's only young and has got bags of potential.

the most pleasing aspect is the fact he is English, and we need to be building for the future with young English players .more clubs need to be looking at this and using the players, not just buying them up and then sticking them in their stiffs so they don't progress.
Potential is the most used word, we need to nurture that potential and then other young players will see that the youth principle is still being held to at Saints

I checked the highlights and match reports of both games of the 1-0 games he came on at the hour in one and was an unused sub in the other. No mention in either match report.
Anyone who was at the game recall his play?
or perhaps a Wycombe fan would care to comment please?

As for first team selection after Punch and judy Lallana I would think Dickson (when Richardson is back) Butterfield and perhaps Mills would be in ahead of Holmes and Chamberlain but I hope really for better on the incoming front.

this was not the antonio look alike which i saw at the eastliegh game, but i would still be very pleased if snapped this player up as he looks like a great prospect, pardew will buy. he just wony but anybody who weve been rumuored with it will be under the hat but when he does make it i can see us all being shocked but ery very happy with the signing

Is this the same Matt Phillips who has just joined preston north end ?

Ontario Saint says...
1:12pm Wed 4 Aug 10

It is the same Matt Phillips who PNE have been showing interest in. They have not actually signed him so this is the reason I presume why AP has stepped in.

I'd imagine Matt Phillips may prefer to stay in the south. He would be stepping up a Division. He'd be with a Club that is very ambitious and which has a squad that would do well even in the Championship.

Sounds like a great signing if Wycombe agree to a deal with Saints

Would prefer BWP to start as I always felt he was more productive coming off the bench.
As for Molyneux, yes please. If we don't know how to get round him........

SW 'fact-bank' another empty account at Fratton then.

I have always thought the same, quality player but unable to fit in with the team. Last chance salon for Holmes this season I think. Looks like any deal for Antonio is dead in the water now. Could this guy be the answer? Are our young starlets good enough for the Premiership in a few years, otherwise there will be a hell of a lot playes in and out again and they'll need time to gel etc

I agree,i thought last season we sometimes looked a little lightweight in the middle of the park, poor teams were dominating the midfield and as much as i think Deano and Morgan are quality i reckon we need another player to either compete with them or play alongside them.

Every day we wait in anticipation for a new signing and the echo tease us with articles like this! boooooo lol

I'm hoping that maybe when friday comes we'll have not 1 or 2 signings, but 3! Vassel, Pappa and Danns ! We can dream!

I think you might be wrong buddy. If Lambert is injured we only have Barny and Connolly, and puncheon lallana etc will not be able to play every game so that's why i'm panicking a little. We still haven't replaced Ants and Papa which does worry me! I agree that we have a 1st eleven that can win the league but we definitely haven't got a complete squad yet.

id settle for that if it meant waiting a bit longer. If it doesnt happen the team we've got should still smash plymouth. UP THE SAINTS

We are a bit light-weight in the last third , connolly , a good player but lets be honest, wiil he play out a whole season ? I think barney will improve no end if given a run in the team, but we lack pace, dont we ?
I think were in for a cracking season, but i bet its another, nail biter !!
It certainly will NOT be the walk over some think it will be.
Im going for automatic...but just.

i agree that if lambert is injured then we could be in trouble as connolly can drop like a fly at any moment if were honest. Im very optimistic though i think automatic is achieveable with the squad weve got if we get the rub of the green

I think we will win this league with a record number of points and record number of goals scored, infact iam going to have a flutter on it friday afternoon when i finish work...

We have the best first team in the league but as winter sets in we need extra strength up front and pace out wide in an impact player. and cover fot injuries. The current squad will be in the top few, cert for play-offs but 2 or 3 additions needed to be sure of auto promotion. We're allowed 25 in the playing squad for the season:
Davis Forecast Bialkowski (if signed) Richardson Butterfield Harding Dickson Mills Fonte Seaborne Martin Jaidi Schneiderlin Hammond Wotton Puncheon Lallana Holmes Chamberlain Lambert Barnard Connolly Thats .. 22
After that we have Reeves McNish Gobern Doble Pulis Saville.
With Richardson out for a fair while Butters won't be able to cover in the mid unless Hards plays right back if thats so Wotton will get starts if Hamma or Spider are hurt as Punch didn't perform there last season.. and perhaps Dicko will be used wide left ahead of Holmsie and Fish until Adam Lallana is fully fit.
' Course all the injuries carried a wink from Pards in his interview.
Vassel running out to train on Friday with a Young Striker and a couple of good loaners and I'll start feeling some butterflies easing for Pards sake

With the guys in the driving seat not giving out any information of course we get nervous. Fans have confidence we'll get there this year but are realistic enough to know that speed strength and a bit of extra versatility in the squad early and we won't be sweating again through the Christmas window wondering if a new manager will be coming in..
If player have been crossed off the list why are we reading about else where when the OS promised the news would come from them. The negotiations for Tyson Carter Waigo and Ants announcements could easily have been made saving a lot of wondering by faithful keen fans but no we read about it elsewhere. I wonder is Vassell off or was he ever on.
Looks like we're bargain hunting with a fairly small budget. (ooo how'd love to eat those words when we get a great star in next week)
