Nigel Adkins admitted his side gave away two poor goals to lose to Huddersfield.

The Saints boss saw his five match unbeaten run ended by a 2-0 defeat at the Galpharm as first half strikes from Anthony Pilkington and Joey Gudjonsson did for his side.

He said: “We gave two poor goals away.

“You’ve got to turn around and say credit to Huddersfield first and foremost because I thought they worked ever so hard in closing us down to try and stop us playing and because of that maybe we were caught in two minds in trying to play when maybe we should have played the ball further up the field of play and played from there.

Saints v Huddersfield - as it happened

“That was lessons learned and I think first and foremost well done to Huddersfield first half but we gave two cheap goals away from our point of view.

“One was a free kick and the other a corner that came off the post and out for a rebound.

“From our point of view there are things we maybe could have dealt with better.

“Second half there was a massive turning point where the lads have come out and the defender from Huddersfield has blocked the shot from Guly. Puncheon put in a great cross in the first minute and if that goes in it would have been a totally different game.

“The one they score on half time gave them momentum for the second half whereas at 1-0 you are still in the game.

“We had far more of the play second half but they had something to hold onto at 2-0 up.

“You have to give credit where credit’s due first half but you always analyse the goals you give away and we could have prevented them.”
