Billy Sharp's former boss Sean O'Driscoll backs the striker to be a St Mary's success

Billy Sharp Billy Sharp

SEAN O’Driscoll has hailed Saints’ new signing Billy Sharp as “priceless” and the “most indispensable striker” he has ever managed.

The 25-year-old is set to make his debut for Nigel Adkins’ side in tomorrow’s visit to promotion rivals Birmingham, having signed from Doncaster in a £1.8m deal earlier this week.

O’Driscoll, who brought Sharp to the Keepmoat Stadium, is confident the player can help Saints reach the Premier League.

“Billy has been probably the most indispensable striker I have ever worked with,” said O’Driscoll. “Billy’s a goalscorer and ultimately those are priceless.

“Saints are a good fit, and it is a club that has massive potential to consolidate itself back in the Premier Division.”

Yay more news:-)

Can't wait to see Billy play, got a real good feeling about him and Lambert, and of course Lee. We need a little more balls in front of goal. We seemed to want to walk it in on tuesday night. Confident thats all going to get back to normal. COYRs

Good luck Billy, but this will be a tough match and I have written to Nigel to say that in these critical times we need more lateral thinking and innovation in both our tactics and team selection for away matches.
Two suggestions are:

Tactics - play a 1-10 'Fortress' formation. All ten players outfield players form a closed 'huddle' around the ball - each within striking distance of it, yet shielding it, thus keeping within the rules. The Fortress then slowly moves upfield and into the opposition goal.

Selection - the 'Jumbly Factor'. Bring in Dave, the 29 stone bloke who was featured in ITV's 'Britain's fattest Man' documentary. The programme showed how the jab on his stomach could envelop an entire football. Thus Kelvin gives the ball to Dave, who envelops it in his giant fat fold and then walks into the opposition goal, lifts his jab up and the ball dops in.

I see no rules broken here - though no doubt the purist pundits will gripe at half time on TV, especially about Dave.

Nigel is unlikely to acknowledge my assistance in all of this, but I care not - results are what matters.

You can tear up the form book now that we have Billy Sharp... and if we put out our strongest side ... I think we will go back to the TOP and stay there for the rest of the Season.

TBH I'd happily settle for a draw on Saturday.
Brum are unbeaten at home and have only conceded 6 goals there, so will be a very difficult place to go and get a win.

Will Chaplow be back? NA was asked, in his latest interview, about Chappers' and Jos' fitness, and although happy to confirm Jos would not be ready for Saturday, NA never said a word about Chaplow.
I'm hoping that means he is under consideration.

Moving on with our attempts to help the skates in their hour of need why not have a sponsored "kick a skate day"?

A number of skates desperate to save their club could come to SMS and for a fiver you can kick them. Better known skates would of course be a tenner. And our overseas contingent needn't miss out on the charity event either, they can pay their money online and nominate one of us to do the kicking on their behalf. If they've had their own bad experiences they may for example nominate RedArmy1 or J7 to put the shoe in for them. If they just want a bit of fun, nothing too permanent, maybe Confucious or Osprey could administer the booting?

Just a thought, only trying to help.

Will the skates be disinfected before the kicking or will facilities be made available for disinfecting our boots/shoes/winkle pickers afterwards?

If neither is the case, would it be possible for my cocker spaniel, Fenton, to chase a large group of skates round the pitch perimeter, giving them a 150 yard start - huge crowd to shout 'FENTON! FENTON! JESUS CHRIST FENTON' in attempt to control the very naughty boy.

Let's hope the ref makes the decision that is right for football and doesn't allow the fact that it is a televised game to sway his decision.

I would assume that this concern means that St Andrews does not have under soil heating?
Having just looked at the forecast for Birmingham (-3C tonight, briefly rising to +1C Saturday, dropping back to 0C in time for the kick off, with heavy snow due during the match), I would suggest this game will be postponed, unless Sky convinces the ref to let it go ahead.

I'd sooner play them on a good surface, where the result will come down to football and not someone slipping on his backside on a rock hard pitch, gifting a goal or 2.

If they were prepared to pay the post and packing we could have a mail order option where you receive your skate via UPS, give it a right good kicking and then send it back in the packaging provided.

Claridge, Fred and Westwood have been reserved for the exclusive Corporate event - Stomp a Skate - which will go to auction, feel free to bid. I shall leave Fred to you as his daughter is a good friend of mine, at least that gives me more money to bid on the other two.

They do not make the rules and are only doing their jobs! Although some may do it differently than others. Although some fans behave very differntly towards the Stewards than others.

In my experience if you are rude or aggressive to others you will not always get the best response! Some of the responses to Stewards asking fans to sit down in the Northam Home is appalling and it is not surprising when they get short change back.

The club are applying the rules of the FA and sometimes it appears that they are doing too much considering the Stewards in the Away section never seem to even try and do anything!!

...... so, I have Flash Player working when opening t'Internet with Internet Explorer, but I open the Echo threads on Firefox, on which I now block FlashPlayer.

So, open Firefox and search for Flash Blocker. Then follow the instructions.

Yes, it's bl00dy annoying and I wish the Echo would get shot of it. However, in the meantime, this seems to be a good compromise.

Good luck!

I know it's a solo for the oboe but I think it works rather well.
Puppy, I have no idea what BB's Six Metamorphoses After Ovid sounds like (although I was at an English Chamber Music thing on Sunday and Britten was one of the featured English composers) but I'm certain you have a streak of madness about you to be proud of.

Maybe, if the game gets called off tomorrow, you could spend the time finding some words to fit Jupiter from Holst's Planet Suite.

Unless we are the team receiving the gifts!!!!!!!

And our overseas contingent needn't miss out on the charity event either, they can pay their money online and nominate one of us to do the kicking on their behalf. It should carry a Govt. Health Warning:

All participants must scrub up and wear protective clothing before taking part.

As for the other game, 'p!ss on a skate', apparently the bilharzia worm, which lives on river and sea beds, can climb up urine. So that would just be too risky.

Seed, you're a very irresponsible man.

I live about 30 miles south (as the sh1te hawk flies) at lower level in the Severn valley, and the local weather forecast for Brum is not good. Snow is shown at 3.00pm and they claim 50 to 100mm snow (2 to 4 inches), turning to sleet, then rain which will freeze in the evening. Return travel conditions not being good. I think both sides agreed that the bad element on both sides would ruin it. However the olive branch was appreciated by many and the suggestion is there for a well organised truce day for South Coast Football Fans at some time in the future. I think some were wrong to say pompey didn't support us when we were just about down.. I still remember many decents posts here saying much the same as we do.. love to see them go down and suffer but wouldn't want them gone. For now we are still bantering no one is sanctioning getting hurt at Fratton.

He strikes me as a man whose whole life is built on playing football and scoring goals. It's what he turned to for comfort when faced with one of the most **** hands life can throw at you. Just imagine how someone whose need to score goals is that instinctive could be when playing alongside Sir Richard who, more than any striker I've seen, loves creating chances for others.
