SAINTS escaped from a snow-covered St Andrew’s with a 0-0 draw against promotion rivals Birmingham.
In a scrappy game of few chances, it was the hosts who had the better of the opportunities.
But Nigel Adkins’ men, who lost Danny Fox to a sending off late on, were able to hold firm.
The result means Saints maintain second place in the Championship, although they have now fallen four points behind leaders West Ham, who beat Millwall 2-1 in a lunchtime kick-off.
However, they extended the lead over third-placed Cardiff to two points, after the Bluebirds lost 3-1 at home to Blackpool.
Birmingham remain five points behind Saints and slipped to fifth behind Blackpool, but play their game in hand at home to Pompey on Tuesday.
