Impressive Saints breeze past Burnley

Click here to see more images

SAINTS cruised past Burnley 2-0 at St Mary’s to move a point behind leaders West Ham at the top of the Championship.

The club’s first home victory of 2012 came courtesy of Adam Lallana’s header and a Ben Mee own goal.

The Hammers, who Saints visit in a huge clash on Tuesday, had their trip to Peterborough postponed because of a frozen pitch, allowing Nigel Adkins’ side to close the gap.

Saints received further boosts elsewhere today, with third-placed Birmingham having their match against Barnsley called off and fourth-placed Cardiff losing 2-1 at Leicester.

That means Southampton have now opened up a five-point gap over their nearest two challengers for second position.

Well done Saints, this win builds on a steady improvement through january and a hard fought draw away to the brum. So with no cups left to distract us from the main mission, time to look ahead to the last sixteen games of the season. All games after west ham look winnable with the current squad. If we draw or better with west ham, the rest of the season is squarely in our hands. No reason why we cant average slightly above two points a game in the last fifteen games. We will rarely have a better chance to get back to the premiership. We've done the hardest work, now let's see this out.

Brilliant result. Jos and Guly brought balance to the team and the change in tactics for Kelvin to deliver angled kicked balls down the channels made all the difference. Very impressed with Billy Sharp he gives us a lot more running power up front which doesn't restrict us to a slow build up from the back with rolled passes to the split centre backs. A tactic which has encouraged teams to close us down.

Absolutely spot on, a great team performance. Looking forward to the West Ham game and Derby next Saturday.

Doubt if even 'doommongers' would have thought it possible to lose every game? It is a bit of a silly comment and eternal optimsts are just the other side of the same coin?

Brillant result today plsu other results gone our way. It is entierly different now to two weeks ago and very important to be going to West Ham in positive frame of mind - lets keep another clean sheet there and so give Lambert and Sharp the best chance of winning it for us

What the negative posters don't realise is that all the other teams are just as likely, if not more so, as Saints to lose games.

They saw us lose form and automatically panicked, assuming that the other teams would pass us by, yet as we have seen, despite our loss of form in December and some bad luck in January, only West Ham have managed to get past us. And that took them several attempts, because they are feeling the pressure the same as everyone else.

What Saints have, that WHU, Birmingham, Cardiff et al don't have, is the fact that we KNOW that we can handle the pressure, as proved last season.
WHU and Birmingham are still recovering from being relegated and are (especially WHU) under intense pressure to go straight back up again. Cardiff are perennial bottlers, usually falling away early into the new year, settling for play off places each year.

I am still quietly confident of an automatic promotion spot, but expect it to go to the wire.

Get Chappers back for WH. It'll be muck and nettles as well as flair. Possibly m/f core of Chap and Ham. Fight the dirty (Nolan!) WH there and kill them with Ricky, Billy and flair on the flanks. Belief is back (welcome back Jos, we missed you!). Let battle commence!!! COYR

Good result today. Burnley didn't threaten at all, bit like palace. Our play is all pretty but we need to be more dominating, opposition seem to have a way back into game. Lambert needs to get into box more often, seems to spend most of his time on the wings.
Glad to see guly r/midfield, he deserves his chance. Lallana bright, sharp feeling his feet, fonte and hos dominant. Full backs poor distribution from both. When opponents have corner, why do we not have an outlet, both our forwards are defending. Attack is the best form of defence, at least 1 forward should be pushing their defence on the back foot.

Congratulations on the first truly negative post about today's performance.

To be honest, I was expecting it, as you're nothing if not predictable.

I hate to say this but in one way Ghk is right. When we are defending corners or free kicks we don't leave anyone up front so when we clear the ball goes straight back to the opposition. Nigel screamed at Billy Sharp to stay up on more than one occasion from a set piece.
However, this is easily put right on the training pitch. Today (and Tuesday despite what the boo boys say) we were positive, creative and attacking. A welcome return to form. I am now licking my lips for my short journey to upton park.
