Shearer backs Lambert to shine in the big time
8:30am Monday 21st May 2012 in Sport
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Rickie Lambert
ALAN Shearer has backed Saints hotshot Rickie Lambert to be a hit in the Premier League next season.
After a career spent entirely in the lower leagues, Lambert will at last get a chance to test himself at the elite level of English football when the new campaign begins.
Whether the 30-year-old striker can translate his sensational scoring form of the past few years into the top flight is likely to be one of the big topics of debate around St Mary’s this summer.
But he has already received the seal of approval from Shearer – the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer.
The legendary former Saints striker admits Lambert, who has netted 88 times in just three years at St Mary’s, will find goals much harder to come by now.
But he believes the club’s current star targetman will still prove to be an effective force in the top division – as long as Saints can provide him with the necessary service.
“He has scored the goals last season to help them get up,” said Shearer, referring to the 31 times Lambert struck across all competitions in 2011/12.
“Can he score goals in the Premier League? I don’t see any reason why not, if they can get the service to him, which is key.
“It will be a lot more difficult than it has been for him, but I don’t see why not.
“Once a goalscorer always a goalscorer.”
Shearer came through the ranks at The Dell, scoring 43 goals in 158 appearances, before Blackburn paid a then British record sum of £3.6m to prise him away in 1992.
Although it is now 20 years since he was a Saint, the club still holds a place in the 41-year-old’s heart.
And Shearer, a pundit on the BBC’s Match of the Day highlights show, is looking forward to seeing a lot more of them next season.
“I’m delighted (they will be back in the Premier League),” he said, before going on to praise the work done by manager Nigel Adkins, who has guided the team to back-to-back promotions.
“I’ve seen them a couple of times live last season and the manager has done a fantastic job and they have a centre-forward in Rickie Lambert who has scored goals wherever he has been.
“I’m looking forward to them enjoying Premier League football.”

Grant Holt is a fat old donkey who somehow bundles in a few goals. Rickie is a player with rare skill and finesse who will light up the Premier League.

In terms of achievement the RDMs of this world are over publicised. RDM had a job for eight weeks, the team was already there, the previous manager did not get on with some old hands in the squad and got the bullet. So RDMs temporary job was to restore confidence. He did that, probably by pandering to his mates. Well done. Thank you and good night RDM.
The simple fact is that Chelsea won the FA cup and it really had nothing to do with RDM.
The simple fact is that Chelsea are probably the worst team to have ever won the Champions league. They were outplayed and competley out of their class in the final. Bayern threw it away and they know it. Chelsea were astonshingly lucky in the semi final too. And does everyone remember Napoli in the quarter final, they werer streets better than Chelsea.
So why is he being touted as a replacement? The true depth is not there and all he achieved was to be caretaker at the luckiest point in their entire history.
So get real.

This is completley off topic but did anyone read the Daily Mail at the weekend. Story about Atkins stuggling to keep his job as Cortese wants Di Matteo, this probably won't come to anything especially now Di Matteo can add a Champions League trophy to his CV he can probably attract (dare I say it) a bigger club than my beloved Southampton FC. I do wonder where these stories come from though.

His great touch and passing will enable Saints to hold the ball up more effectively.
The down side to this will be that his scoring oportunities will drop.
This will mean that the other forwards will have to earn their corn.
Our midfield players also will have to come up to the plate and make a greater contribution this season.
I still think Rickie will be in the top scorers in the division, if not top, he is that good!

Southampton fans are preparing a 'Save a Skunt' campaign in the event that PFC is liquidated.
Saints fans fear that as the Blue Few get ever fewer, they will be extinct within a generation. They believe something should be done or Skunts will disappear into mythology and their grandchildren will never believe they really existed.
Saints fans are raising funds for one of the following options:
1. A breeding pair of snarling Skunts to be housed at Marwell Zoo.
2. The funny man with the hat and bell to be stuffed and exhibited at the St Marys stadium shop.
3. A Skunt to be pickled and put into a giant clear glass bottle for exhibition at the Natural History Museum.

I personally try to give subjective views on our football team and yes sometimes have a bit of fun at Pompey's expense.
Yes, I agree that Holt can play
He like Rickie has had to prove many wrong.
IMO. Rickie Lambert may not have his pace but he has the 2 yards in his mind, that few others have had since Teddy Sherringham.
So pace isn't every thing.
So please dont tar everyone with the same brush.
Remember this site is for peoples opinions, not just yours.

Also NA made a comment at the end of season about having to leave Saints one day and he hoped there wouldn't be any bad feelings. Or words to that effect.
I have tried to get odds from a number of bookies on Di Matteo taking over from NA and nobody will take the bet because NA hasn't been sacked.
No I don't want Nigel to go, I just like a small punt on long odds, if I can get them!

Micheal Owen was asked by LieTiss if he would consider coming to saints he said yes.
I do not think NA is going anywhere.
Chelsea were in disarray when De Matteo went there. The players think he is great and he has produced two cups. He had 4 first teamers out suspended at the week end. I would never want to see Saints play that way. Yet the speed and pace on and off the ball by both sides showed us we need to up our tempo at least 50%

Cheers Strazzy. Although I think you're being a bit harsh about my music. I mean, I'm currently listening to the One Direction album. It's the absolute BOMB. All killer no filler.
In fact, I'm something of an old f4rt who is only now looking beyond my musical comfort zone (you can thank the little Strassies for that).
I grew up as punk was changing music and, at the time, didn't really get it. The '80s bored me most of the time. I always thought Morrissey and Cocker were a couple of knobwands (you introduced that word into my vocab) and I find most things that have come out of Manchester (from The Fall, through the Happy Mondays to Oasis) alright until the second or third track; then I want something else.
Sadly, while liking some of the more imaginative stuff out there, I hate to admit to thinking that you can't beat a good ballad.
Still, at least you can't question my footballing tastes.

YOU'LL FEEL LIBERATED ONCE YOU DO IT. STACK SHELVES FOR A LIVING INSTEAD.

The rumour of him taking over now just seems far-fetched to me...

I think that would be about right.
How many did Le God get during the same period? That's the target Adam needs to aim for, whilst Tad or Billy will need to equal Danny Wallace.
If we could score a few more from corners ......
