Southampton 'make £6m-plus offer' for Jay Rodriguez claim reports

Jay Rodriguez (left) Jay Rodriguez (left)

Saints have reportedly offered in excess of £6m for Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez.

Nigel Adkins failed in his pursuit to sign the highly-rated forward during last summer's transfer window, but it appears the club have now gone back in for the 22-year-old as they look to strengthen the squad for their Premier League return.

The Clarets are ideally hoping to receive £8m for the player, who has one year left to run on his contract, but were said to be mulling over the offer from Saints, according to reports from Lancashire.

However, this afternoon Burnley's head of media, Darren Bentley, claimed the club had received no bids for the young striker, who is also said to be attracting the attention of Sam Allardyce at West Ham.

In the Prem clubs need 5 strikers who can be rotated on a regular basis. Anything less than that will not take care of injuries, suspensions or loss of form. Especially if you are not a top ten team, which I don't think we will be.

Rodriguez has pace and so does Tandanari Lee...but also young enough to develop further into the Southampton Way. This would give us more fire power with Ricky, Sharp, Barnard and Guly.
I'm sure NA will look for more pace on the flanks as that is where we need to strengthen.

The pace will come from the wings, I would expect offers for Ince an Phillips - possible Jarvis if we can get him.

I know he's a proven goal scorer at the lower levels, but can he cut it in the prem.

Personally I'd prefer someone with proven premiership goal scoring ability, but never the less In NC and NA I trust.

Thinking about it with Sir Rickie supplying the flick on's for Rodrigues or Sharp we should be able to score a hatful of goals no matter who plays, or better yet if BOTH play either side of Rickie in a three man attack the opposition defence would be s******g themselves and I've no doubt this would catch a few teams by surprise.

We need two strikers:
Jay and Hooper.
At least 2 pacey wingers:
1 to push Lallana on the left - Ince or Phillips. Then 1 first teamer on the right - Jarvis/Snodgrass. Back up would be Guly.
1 CM - prem quality. I would expect this position to be a foreigner.
1 CB - prem quality. Curtis Davis/Mathew Bates.
1 goalie - young talented englishman
Thats 7 players.

Get rid of Barnard, Seabourne, Forte, Dickson, Puncheon either sell or on loan. De ridder or Hammond could stay and not really play or go as well.

1st team something like:
Davis, Richardson, Fox, Holiveld, Fonte, NEW RIGHT winger, Lallana, Spiderman, NEW CM, Lambert, NEW STRIKER.
Bench/ squad rotation - Sharp, Lee, NEW STRIKER, NEW LEFT WINGER, Cork, Guly, Chaplow, Martin, NEW CB, Butterfield, Harding, NEW GK. 23 players.
Plus 4-5 of the youth team. Reeves, Shaw, Stephens etc

Thats a quality squad of 23 (+youth) mixed with promotion players, new quality players and the up and coming youth players. Spend would be about 20-25m.

i am not so sure that £6 million is a good price, we are talking about a player that has a year to run on his contract, he should be available for half that price as he is into the last year, we dont want to pay over the odds for players that might not cut it.

Still speculation like this keeps fans coming back to the Echo website, which in turn brings them in an income through the advertisments here.

Just as I thought we had some news I see it is caveated with the usual mystified denials.

The price does seem a bit high but I leave that to the wise heads with the deep pockets.

I also noted some comments here about Barnard. I think it is unwise to call him a "make weight" . I think he's much better than people acknowledge and should attract a much more significant fee. We will lose cash if we let him go as "part of a deal" . I am sure NC will not overlook this point.

of course it was , it was the reason we got relegated, average players on stupid contracts... £20-£25M for 12/13, £25-30M for 13/14, and assuming a bigger capacity by 14/15 , then £30-£40M. Sounds reasonable to me given our current squad and the likely make-up of our squad in the coming couple of years...

In any event there would be the clubs with stupid budgets who would simply outbid us.

I doubt we will get any of the so called "big" names down here until we have been up for more than a season. We are only likely to be fishing in the "sensible" ponds at home and maybe we will pick up some true quality from abroad . bigger names all depends on the story that people hear about Saints and what the plans are for the club...if the vibe is good then certain players would take a punt... obviously many players are just greedy money grabbing sh1tes with no soul, loyalty or integrity but there are some true human beings out there who will put their faith in certain managers and go on a certain journey. who knows.....

Rhodes however will be I think cheaper especially if Huddersfield don't make the Championship on Saturday, possibly with Barnard going the other way, with respect to Lee Clark and Simon Grayson Rhodes will get better at Saints.

The Ince lad at Blackpool is right up there with those on my list, maybe cash plus swap Puncheon deal could be done.

Centre back for Fonte (I worry about him) is needed, Craig Gordon would be an excellent back up to JD, another 2 central midfielders and 2 strikers.

Get rid of Barnard, Seabourne, Forte, Dickson, Puncheon, Hammond, Guly.

Other than that we are in pretty good shape

Wayne Bridge? Sorry but he was and always will be overrated. A nice player but there's something very Tyro league about the way he kicks the ball (which is always backwards BTW) and in my opinion not better than Fox. I think his name proceeded him and then he's been found out at every club.
.
Owen wouldn't be in it for the long haul and I'd guarantee NC wouldn't pay more than a quid for a player as injury prone as him as it's not an investment. If he brought his wages down to less than £20k per week and was on a free it would be worth a second glance but we all know he is only in it for the money.

Now then, take teams like everton for example who struggle financially, but have some degree of stability which has maintained their premiership existence, the saints team that came up would play them off any park you care to mention. Sooo when any player is mentioned that has performed well in the championship its my humble opinion that they will do the bizz in the prem.

Sooo when any player is mentioned that has performed well in the championship its my humble opinion that they will do the bizz in the prem.

I have a problem with bringing in players with "prem experience" didn't Poopey just get relegated from the Championship with player with "prem ex " ?
players who were on very high wages and were allegedly really good when they bought them ?
Buy players who are good in whatever league they are playing in, if that happened to be the Prem, then ok !
Do not buy players who have had multiple relegations or have only played for losing teams.
We want winners, so we will be winners !
Defoe is a very good idea, Joe Cole is a left field idea, Kalou is a good statement, although I personally think he is over-rated but what do I know?
We have a few players we can sell to Championship teams with hopes, others who will only be squad and make occasional appearances.
The young players coming through are being watched by the likes of Arsenal , so they must be good prospects and they need to be nurtured carefully.
The future is bright, honestly ! ! ! !

I'd have love to have kept hold of Oxo (if he'd have wanted to stay)...him and AL switching wings would have ripped up the Prem. Anyone agree that Jarvis could be an option?

I never thought I'd say this, but have NA and NC gone insane?? Rodriguez is a journeyman striker at best, just 15 goals last season in the Championship against some weak defences, whereas we will be playing against PREMIER LEAGUE defences next year. He is valued at only £1.5M by the authoritative transfermarkt website, so why would we bid more than 4 times that?? Still, at least we know what our increased season ticket prices are being used for.

Exactly, ridiculous price tag, Jordan Rhodes would be my choice, yes it he scored his league one, but hang on, so did Rickie a couple of seasons ago, everyone says he will do it in the Premier League, worth a £2million punt.

I honestly think its all on the result of the play off final on Saturday, if Huddersfield don't make it, £2 million is a lot to spend in League One, agreed excellent squad member, young enough the learn more, we will make him a better player.

could not agree more! prem clubs have for years brought in cheaper foreign players rather than pay the higher asking price of lower league teams for british players. this has increased the quality of lower league football in this country as those players stay at lower levels. i am not saying we should pay over the odds for british players, all i am saying is there are some better quality players at lower levels than some so called prem quality players! if you can get the right player at the right price it shouldn`t matter what level they have previously been at! for example former liverpool player david ngog scored 4 goals in 27 apps for bolton last season, how many would rickie or billy have got? some (not me) thought rickie would struggle at champ level. the same thing has happened with british managers, there are many quality british managers plying their trade at lower levels whilst prem clubs have had a love affair with foreign managers. I am not anti foreign players/managers i would just like to see some more british talent given a chance.

Both would be a good buy for SAINTS - hooper and jay rod - let's get them in ASAP.

Don't worry about Kelvin - a good quality keeper and there is a lot of choice out there - should improve our Team and they can fight for the number 1 Slot.

Don't forget about strengthening our Defence - no disrespect to Danny Butterfield (and I know he is one of Nigel's favourites) but against some-one like Nani - no chance - he is just not good enough.

Getting another CB is important. Nigel might gamble or argue that Jose will do a job for Saints. If it was based on the Coventry Game - I would agree - but over the Season he has struggled and on more than one occasion grappled the man instead of going for the ball.

When I saw Chappers score against manure in the FA Cup - I was impressed... but of late I have been disappointed with his Strike Rate considering the number of chances he has had.

If Rickie had laid off those chances to Steeeeeeeeeve in a more central role then i think Saints would have had more success.

Disagree about Butterfield.
On the occasions I've seen him play, he's had a few good games and I can't recall him having a 'bad' game.
In one match he put in a brilliant performance.

I'm more concerned with cover at LB.
IMO Harding is not as good a deputy in that position as Butterfield is at RB.

Owen is an injury waiting to happen.
He has had a serious knee and numerous muscle problems, even while at ManUnited. His pace has been affected by this.
Ferguson just used him as a back up goal poacher. I accept he was a great scorrer when he was young and no doubt he will still get a few goals for a championship side.

I completely agree that we don't need players purely because "they have experience" and that players from the Championship, or possibly even lower, are capable of doing very well in the Premier League. But I have to take exception to your Everton remark. I think too many fans think we are better than we are, play them off the park? A bit too arrogant don't you think? We will do ok in our first season, but lets not start claiming we will be playing teams that consistently finish in the top 8 off the park...coincidentall
y Everton are a good example of what you were saying about buying players from the lower leagues, Beckford aside of course...

Your assumption about good Championship players doing well in the Premier League is not always right. For instance the following Reading players, who have achieved something, but really haven't shone at the top level.

Hunt, Kitson, Long, Shorey, Doyle and the mid field player who is now at Fulham.

The size of their transfer fees does not reflect their performances at the highest Level. Good at times but not consistent. Same as Surman with Norwich, if you recall he failed with Wolves.

I think we we have to buy some
experienced Premier League/foreign players to supplement our existing players and any others we get in from the lower leagues.

Norwich and Swansea won't stay up forever by buying from the lower divisions, Reading didn't.

He always came over as such a clean cut lad.

I know we are building for the future and concentrating on youth but it would be great to have a 'big name' player provided he could still offer alot. We proved it can be done with Keegan, Ball, Osgood, George, Watson, Mills, Case etc.

He's just flogged an absolute donkey to Wayne Rooney. He'd turn our entire squad to gambling on really rubbish horses and they'd all end up destitute. It would be awful.
He always came over as such a clean cut lad. I know we are building for the future and concentrating on youth but it would be great to have a 'big name' player provided he could still offer alot. We proved it can be done with Keegan, Ball, Osgood, George, Watson, Mills, Case etc.
I agree, but I don't think Owen is the man. He'd cost a fortune and only be fit to play about two games.

Hahaha!

I agree Owen is probably not the man, be too much like DC - great when fully fit but too rarely available to make it worth it.

Who are today's players that fit into that mould? Probably the likes of Giggs and Scholes but they seem to be playing to the very end at Manure.

I can't see us or anyone else paying £6 million for JayRod. He only has one year on his contract so I would have thought half of that would be about right. We may bring in Owen, I think he could still do a job and would certainly help the youngsters to be training with him or anyone else of his undoubted calibre. NC and NA have a difficult job keeping the team spirit and at the same time bringing in probably half a dozen new faces. Think it will be a test for NA as he will want to show loyalty to the players who have achieved so much, I think NC will have no such problem in getting rid of anyone not up to scratch.

Sorry possums, but I feel some of you boys are getting a little starry eyed and delusional about Taffy Sick Note Owen and his possible contribution to Saints. He is IMO one of a number of players that have shown exceptional talent over the years but are now old injury crocks that have proved ultimately unreliable to their teams cause. A’ la Jamie Redknapp, Ledley King, Mush on the Beach, Owen Hargreave etc.

No time or space for old experienced overpaid has beens, the Saints Prem model should look no further than Geordie land model. Exciting young talent that the big boys have turned their nose up at A’la Cisse, Ba, Cabaye, Mush on the Beach and Ben Arfa.
I hope Nicola reads these pages, it's full of gems for how to improve out footy club, present company excluded!!!

We can't afford to carry anyone now.
COYR.
We're all entitled to our own opinions I guess but he is the exact kind of squad player we need! Didn't we take a risk with Connolly? Look how well he did for us when he was fit.

And..Owen has been fit for months now and like you said Fergie has been using him as a back up goal poacher... a player of his calibre can teach the youngsters coming through also.

By the way it's not just Fergie who rates him, Le God seems to think he's still got it! But hey what do they know eh?! Lol

If he brought his wages down to less than £20k per week and was on a free it would be worth a second glance but we all know he is only in it for the money.
fox is a poor left back .bridge would be better fox is ok going forward crosses .but fonte and ho have carried him to much .he was not good enough in the premier with burnley .it is important we buy a left back urgently and for cover .davis bham was miles the best left back in the championship i would bid for him ,way better than fox

Rodiguez at 6 million in his last year of his contract is to much. Howe wanted Seabourne last season. What we part exchange Seabourne and Barnard with a cash adjustment would be a better deal. Also Saints never disclose what they pay for players so I would take 6 million with a pinch of salt. Transfer window opens tomorrow. Prehaps we will see some movement.
No way will Celtic let Hooper go.

How about Gattuso for CM ??Milan are letting him go ,he is just the kind of player we @ soton like ,tough tackler and inspirational !!!

Cole has kept Bridge on the bench throughout his career at club and country level. If Cole hadn't been around he would have had a very different time.

He was an ever present for us, I remember him holding the record for consecutive minutes on the pitch.

Probably best left as memories if we wish to build a team to improve year on year. Also I don't think Fox, Chappers, De Ridder, Sharp etc were bought just to get us promoted. The club isn't as short term as that under NC and NA.
