Hampshire's Friends Life t20 match against Surrey on Wednesday has been postponed following the tragic death of batsman Tom Maynard.

The 23-year-old was struck by a train on the London Underground District Line shortly after 5am this morning.

Maynard was in his second season with Surrey after joining from Glamorgan.

Hugely talented, he was the son of former Glamorgan and England batsman Matthew Maynard.

Hampshire were expecting to face him at The Oval on Wednesday night.

Royals players took to Twitter to pay their tributes to Maynard and send their condolences to his family.

Hampshire t20 captain Dimi Mascarenhas said: "My thoughts and prayers go out to Matt Maynard family and friends at this horrendous time.. Tom will be missed by many.. Sad sad time.."

Sean Ervine wrote: "Unbelievable shocking news! I feel cold! Thoughts and prayers are with the Maynard family...#RIPTOM"

James Vince and Danny Briggs played with Maynard for the England Lions in January. Vince tweeted: "Absolutely devastating news about Tom Maynard. He was a legend of a guy and seriously talented cricketer...Can't actually believe this has happened."

Briggs said: "So shocked to hear the news about Tom Maynard, #RIPTom"

Former Hampshire bowler Chris Tremlett played with Maynard for Surrey.

He posted this tribute: "RIP Tom Maynard. Such a sad loss to everyone that knew him and thoughts are with his family. Absolutely gutted. Will be missed xx"

Former Hampshire and England fast bowler Simon Jones was a Glamorgan teammate when Maynard began his first-class career in 2007.

"Don't know what to say or do, bruiser you'll be sorely missed, you were a special special person and talent! Love you bro," he tweeted
