Birmingham silent over Saints keeper bid

Jack Butland

First published in Sport

Birmingham have refused to comment on reports they have turned down a £6million bid from Saints for teenage goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Butland, called into Roy Hodgson's England squad at Euro 2012 as a replacement for Norwich's John Ruddy, is understood to be a top target for newly-promoted Saints, who had an improved offer for the 19-year-old rejected earlier this week.

The Bristol-born 6ft 4in goalkeeper, yet to make a first-team appearance for Birmingham, has been widely touted to be number one for Team GB at this summer's Olympics and the midlands club are determined to keep hold of their prized asset.

Birmingham installed Lee Clark as Chris Hughton's replacement this week and the former Huddersfield boss has already insisted Butland will remain at St Andrews unless the club received a "crazy offer".

Butland spent the final three months of last season on loan at npower League Two side Cheltenham, where he made 24 appearances.

Like the looks of the lad from the small amount I've seen of him but at over 6 mill bit risky seeing as hes not really played any games. Could be another Richard Wright for all we know.

Birmingham are stalling for more money and there isn't any.

They should deal NOW - and they are getting a very good price.

They (like the blue few) down the road will face administration and down the football league they go !!! They are teetering on the edge.

If the above doesn't happen - with no funds to buy players then the brum are going to have another disappointing Season and Lee Clark will have the billing as the man who can't get a Team promoted.

No wonder their fans are not passionate. When the Snow was falling last Season - the only sound to be heard were the 'hard-core' Southampton Fans.

It doesn't suggest a great deal. Just that a reasonable bid has been turned. More likely, Brum are speaking to the media as a "come back and make a bigger offer" message but Cortese doesn't like to play ball so I am unsure whether we will.

I'd like to acquire Jack but his surname does sound like the sort of place to which Bigrich goes on holiday with Jimmy Sommerville! ;o)

If we have made a bid of that proportion for a second choice keeper, the club must feel he is more than capable to take the shirt from K D.
Nicola seems only to be looking for players that are just starting out to build a career which can only be good for our clubs future. With the young players coming through the club our club could stay in the Premier League for another 27 years. Just think 27 years without having to play the SKUNTS at their sh!t hole, GREAT.

How do you suppose saints came up with an opening gambit of £6 million? If you offer 6 first up aren't you saying here's 6 but I'll go to 7-8? My immediate concern is the coming season not what he'll be like in 2 or 3 years. It's too much for an unproven player, wasn't Kirkland meant to be a future great keeper?

I do hope we can sign this lad but I do wonder how the club can hold us to ransome, when Saints were relagated it was just a free for all to pouch our talent for cut prices. Should we really be spending more than 6m on a goal keeper? Look what happened with that Scottish keeper that Sunderland signed for 9million. I do hope we sign him but for a realistic price.

It might be simply that Birmingham are in debt, and just may be Butland has said I want to talk to Saints.

So the first part could be to appease the fans as Saints tried to do in the past, and now hopefully Butland has suggest he would like to talk/go to Saints. Which would then leave them with the prospect of at least to strike a deal to get some return on the player.

Let us not forget !! When a deal is done NC will tell us. Not before.

He won't tell us how much he paid either, or the deal details

The £6m figure has not come from any Saints source. It's speculation from Birmingham, or the agents or the press.
So guess away, it won't make any difference.

But at least once NC makes his move its conclusive.. and usually very good business.

Wait, be patient, breathe, take in the air, be calm.

Well we definitely need strengthening in the goalkeeping department, and a recent suggestion of bringing alan macgregor from rangers would be an ideal signing, he is scotlands no.1, european experience, we will need that next season! and would be FREE! but after kicking rangers out of the ML cup, that wont go down well. All the other keepers mentioned apart from ben foster are all ones for the future. When planning to stay in the premiership, you need to start from the back.
No word on any signings for our defence so far, anyone heard any rumours?

Seems more than one town in this country has its share of bitter blues.

Just read in a Brazilian newspaper that Lucio (former Brazil captain) has terminated his contracted with Inter by mutual agreement. Rumours say that he's going to Fernebache with an offer of 3 million euros for 2 years. That's about £28,000 a week. And would be free transfer!

We could afford that, couldn't we? He's only 34, the best working ethics of any Brazilian national for a long margin, plenty of experience!

In the lack of news, we can only dream!
