Saints 0 Ajax 1
4:59pm Saturday 28th July 2012 in Sport
Saints suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ajax as they resumed their pre-season preparations at St Mary’s.
The Dutch side bossed the early stages of the game but Saints adapted well to bring themselves back into the reckoning.
However, Jose Fonte 's poor pass out from the back gifted the ball to Aras Obiliz midway through the second half and he showed a calm head in front of goal to score what proved to be the only goal of an interesting game, but one which had few chances.
Saints: Davis (Gazzaniga 70), Clyne (Richardson 46), Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox (Shaw 70), Schneiderlin (Hammond 79), Ward-Prowse (Chaplow 79), Lallana (Puncheon 79), Do Prado (Chambers 84), Rodriguez (De Ridder 84), Lambert (Sharp 70).
Ajax: Vermeer, Alderweireld, Anita, Sigthorsson, De Jong, Janssen, Blind, Boerrigter (Fischer 46), Ozbiliz, Van Rhijn, Dijks.

The difference both defensively and offensively were there to be seen when he went off at half time, so we need to get him fit and keep him fit.
Not at all disappointed with the overall performance, except for the poor pass by Fonte which gave them the goal and also put them back in the ascendency.
Shows that mistakes need to be minimised as at this higher level they WILL be punished more often than last season.
Also shows the need to welly the ball clear, from time to time.

We matched them for "physical fitness" in the game, and were the better "unit/team" for long periods of the game.
The one area we were second best was sharpness in and around goal but that is to be expected when the other team are nearer to their start of the season.
.
As other have said there were a number of good performances from our players e.g. Adam and that Skate who saw the light and chose the BEST CLUB on the south coast (W-P).
(I wonder if the school kids down the road will start wearing "RED and (pinstipe) WHITE" after August 10th. How painful will that be for the bluefew to see their kids and grandkids wearing "Read & White" in future years ?.

Thought we started a bit slow and nervy but after about 20 mins thought we got a decent foothold in the game. It was so refreshing to see Clyne at right back, pure class, thought the midfield players did well and I can see JWP getting a lot of games this season. Lallana and Jayrod looked very good supporting Lambert. The negatives I'm afraid are guly who always seems to choose the wrong option when he gets in a good position, we need a proper winger on the right, either Steeeve or Lens would be great but my biggest concern is Fonte, he was poor for most of last season and was constantly be saved by Jos and it looks like he has started this season just the same. Come on NA get us a decent right sided centre back ASAP.
Sharp looked fit and better than Rickie. Jay Rod promising.
Good second half. We still need three players. CB, RW and another striker. ASAP.

Today, against AJEX , this was the case. Their no.5 was running the midfield for the first 20 minutes and we never got a look in. Nigel had a word with Ward- Prowse to close him down changed formation and we gradually started to boss the game. This is what preseason is all about.Myself i am pleased with what i watced at ST MARY'S today. We only let a top european side one chance at goal and created chances to score ourselfs.
The new RB Nathaniel Clyne looked a good buy and will fit in with the way we play . Ward-Prowse looks like he could become another ALLAN BALL, a big claim i know but he 's only 17 and was one of our best players today. We are building a young talanted side that will keep us in good shape in years to come. I believe Nigel stated he is still trying to add to the squad so he knows what we still needs and i believe he will get.
Next Saturday wolves at home, get down there and see for yourselfs our future is bright, it's RED AND THIN PIN STRIPE WHITE.

I can't see another striker joining as we still have Tad Lee to come in (depends on the length of injury though), and we have quite a versatile squad.
I thought that the way Shaw played when he came on, I don't see an urgent need for a left-back unless it's to replace Fox. I'd like to see a more experienced CB in for a couple of seasons to be replaced by Stephens who has looked good.
It's good to see that these youngsters aren't just there to make up numbers, and can actually challenge for starts despite their age.

Total agree with you about Fonte. He was badly exposed 6 times and Ajax weren't even hugely threatening. Jos is continually covering for him.
I'm not normally a Guly fan, but I thought he had a great game for us tonight. Looked solid.
SRL looked lumbering. Needs to sharpen up for Prem. Hoped he would have got his head down in the break, not got his head down in a plate of pies.

His running off the ball was very good and on a number of occasions our players failed to send the early ball to him, by the time they passed it, it was too late, either caught offside or marked up. He did a lot of chasing back, but was off balance when tackling, something that can be worked on. When the high ball was going towards Lambo, no one was getting themselves into a position to receive the knockdowns. anticipation is another area that should be worked on in training.
Was anyone other than me pretty unimpressed with Rodriguez? I had high hopes, but I didn't see much sign of pace, of intelligent/penetrat

According to the Daily Mirror, Southampton have made an enquiry to sign their former starlet Theo Walcott from Arsenal.
The England international is in the final year of his contract with the Gunners and unless he signs a new deal with them, chances are that he’ll be sold this summer.
Clubs such as Chelsea and Liverpool have reportedly been monitoring Walcott’s contractual situation but now Southampton have also joined the race to bring the speedy winger back to St Mary’s. The surprising fact is that the Saints are not only willing to splash some serious cash for the £15 million-rated player but are also prepared to offer him the lucrative £100,000-a-week deal that he is looking for.

Saints Want Theo Back
According to the Daily Mirror, Southampton have made an enquiry to sign their former starlet Theo Walcott from Arsenal.

Survivals going to be tough judging by that performance, the only hope is the academy players who were the only quality on the pitch.
If our only pace comes from our full backs and hence they commit forwards we are left very vulnerable to counterattacks. Imagine pace and quality running at Fonte and Hooiveld. Frightening.
Hence, we need to be able to get down the park with pace and creativity in wide midfield positions, and we need some solid centrebacks. Could be Jos + 1 new CB in my book.
Note that most of SRL's goals from open play were headed with many of the assists from Richardson and Fox. If the pattern of play is like it was last night he wont get on the score sheet often. Too few balls into the box.
Oh - and while I'm off one one, Lallana was excellent in open play but I thought his delivery from corners and free kicks was poor. Needs to work on that...

my one gripe is why didn't sharp use his left foot to put the ball away on his one clear cut chance.
Answer:
Because he's utterly unable to kick a football with his left foot. I've only seen him do it once and it was weaker than my Aunty Alice could have managed on a bad day.

Unfortunately in truth Saints looked lack lustre and seemed to pass the ball back and side ways Butch Wilkins style rather than push up on Ajax defence. We rarely looked threatening and we were slow to close Ajax down on the edge of the box at times. Fonte was exposed for pace and was slow on the turn. In fact the attack looked more lively when Sharp came on.
It was a friendly and was played at a leisurely place by both sides. No one really excelled and a draw would of been a fair result. Saints really do need a couple of players who are not afraid to shoot from outside the box.
As for Walcott? most unlikely, if are unlikely to pay 7mil for Jermain Lens what makes anyone think we will pay around 12-14 mil for Walcott?
We can pass the ball round but we need to do more when we have it.
I trust NA and NC to sort things but we looked short of three players yesterday. Its only an opinion.
Admittedly we have Lee and Davies to come in.

Hmm well maybe with something like 23000 + season tickets sold fans are waiting for the new season. Then Pompey would not know about selling season tickets.

It is one of Saints weaknesses.
Also may find it hard to score goals in the Premership and that's why it would have been great to secure Hooper's signature.
If we can add real Quality to improve our Squad - let's do so.

I dont think we should be looking at results at this time, it's all about getting fit. Sorting out ways to counter play againt other teams when we come up against sides not letting us get the ball.
