AFC Totton  require more concentration tonight after being caught out by a trio of set-pieces as they opened the new Evo-Stik Southern Premier campaign with Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Frome Town.

The Stags, beaten play-off finalists last season, had hoped to hit the ground running under new manager Steve Riley.

But although they led after 18 minutes following a moment of magic from midfielder Jono Davies, slack defending cost them dear.

The breakthrough came when Davies drove at the home defence before whipping in a cross for Richard Gillespie to glance in his first league goal since his summer move from Eastleigh .

Frome’s equaliser arrived on 33 minutes. Luke Whitley was harshly penalised for a foul near the touchline and the free-kick was allowed to bobble around the box before Tom Evans scrambled the ball past keeper Gareth Barfoot.

Six minutes later Totton were again punished for not dealing with a free- kick when Barfoot punched away the initial threat but Lewis Powell was on hand to stab home.

The Stags fell further behind after 73 minutes when a long throw was headed away by Gosney into the path of Ben Woods who cut inside before firing into the far corner.

In Riley’s view, all three goals were preventable.

“It’s not the start we were looking for,” the former Bashley boss confessed.

“We’re all disappointed with the way the goals were conceded.

“Gareth (Barfoot) didn’t have a lot to do all afternoon, but we lacked a bit of concentration from set-pieces and teams will punish you at this level.

“Gilly put us ahead with a good goal created by Jono Davies, but we didn’t build on it.

“We were better in the second half and our fitness levels were good, but we lacked a bit of quality in all departments.

“We had a very disappointed dressing room afterwards, but it’s how you respond that matters. Hopefully we can bounce back at home to Chesham tonight (7.45) and home to Stourbridge on Saturday.”
