Adkins bemoans late defending
7:22pm Sunday 2nd September 2012 in Sport
Nigel Adkins shakes hands with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Nigel Adkins said his side did not defend their penalty area well enough in the closing stages of their heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Manchester United.
Saints led with less than five minutes to go at St Mary’s, but afforded their opponents two free headers in the dying stages that resulted in a pair of Robin van Persie goals.
First, an unmarked Rio Ferdinand headed Rafael’s cross against the post, with the rebound falling to Van Persie to slot home.
Then the Dutch striker flicked in Nani’s corner at the near post in added time to give United all three points.
“There’s two free headers inside our penalty area,” said Adkins. “You’ve got to defend your goal better than that.”
The Saints manager added: “The last goal, we’ve got to go and defend and attack that ball better.
“At the end of the day they’ve got two first contacts on the ball from crosses into the box and that’s the annoying thing.”
Adkins also revealed why he had chosen to substitute three of his most effective players, Jason Puncheon , Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana in the second half.
“We looked at the period of time, with 15 minutes to go, energy,” he said.
“The lads worked their socks off and for me we have a good group of players and a good bench, so why not go and impact it and give us that energy?”

I love Fonte but he's being cruelly exposed at the moment. Fox is a concern also, Jos looks good bar the 2 silly penalties. Davis looks quality in midfield.
On the plus side, we look more than capable at this level and have new players to bring in. It's a shame we have another very tough game next but we have to prepare mentally for potentially loosing another game before things improve.
The Wigan result looks all the more puzzling after this.

Chaplow would have been a good sub, strong and fearless. Never the less, we have what it takes at this level just need to tighten up at the back. Only 6 teams have scored more goals than us but only QPR has let in more. Obvious where we are poor. But the positive is that we have played the two Manchester Clubs and done well, Wigan hopefully was a blip.

Nigel if you hadn't removed our 3 best players the team wouldn't have been put on the backfoot for the last 15 mins of the match. We were in control, no need to change anything. Take some of the blame Nige.

However for those fans getting worried look at where we were 3 years ago, it may be a slow start but we have enough to stay up, every team has a weakness, it's just dependent on how Saints contain these weaknesses so they are not clear as day to the rest of the league.

1. The crowd. As the game was oh so totally utterly sold out to capacity, just 1000 empty seats is a very good performance.
2. The crowd. Most of them stayed until the 89th minute this time!! Good, they are learning.
3. The substitutions. Pure genius from Twadkins. A winning position against the champions-elect, turned into a loss within a few minutes. Arry will not make mistakes like that when he is manager next week.
4. The League position. Only 1 point behind Liverpool after 3 games. You'd certainly have taken that 2 weeks ago if it had been offered to you.

I have had a lot of respect for you but after getting back from the game I have to disagree with what you did.
You took off 3 of our best players and disrupted the balance. We had them beaten (even with a dodgy ref) but your decisions were bad at best.
Spider was immense, Lallana world class, Punchy played his best game and Lambert was cracking.
2 out of 3 games I have been so proud to wear my shirt but you must go to bed thinking what have I done?
If Sharp is only good enough for the Championship.... so are you.

Again FONTE loses concentration in the last vital minutes and K DAVIS had a shocker.
The rest were brilliant.
Although I would add Fox to my list of worries. Fonte has now shown in three games that he is not cut out for this level of football. The third goal came from a corner that should never have been. A horrible sliced clearance. And Davis, while I appreciate he has saved two penalties, they were both sh1t, continually pushes the ball back towards the penalty spot! What's with that? Fox was better today but is still a worry.
The rest were amazing today. RL gave Rio and Vidic a problem every time the ball went up to him. Adam was class. Steve Davis really impressed me. Pleased with Puncheon as he showed real energy and has shown himself to be of good character since his time on the 'otside'.
I am waffling a little. Basically, once again I couldnt be prouder, despite loing 3-2.

We played a blinder today and every one of our players gave his all, each one making a number of telling contributions throughout the game.
It was a case of fine margins for how we lost today and it wasn't the fault of any of the subs or any of our players in particular and it was certainly nothing to do with our manager's decision making.
We were on the back foot before the subs were made for reasons that are more than things within Saints control. Ferguson knows a few things about winning games too, or do all the know alls on here think his team didn't come into the equation?
It might be easier to try and pin the blame on a specific player or on a specific decision, but it isn't like that and that is why I am eternally grateful that Adkins is our manager rather than any of you posters on here.
Adkins was imploring the team to push out towards the end, before the substitutions, and not get pegged into their area but they couldn't do it. He had to change something and freshen up the attack. Sadly, it wasn't quite enough, but we will learn from it and we will get better at dominating the best teams in the land, which we demonstrated we can do today.
The fans of the most successful clubs get behind their team no matter what. Perhaps if more Saints fans could get some perspective and not want to throw the baby out with the bath water just because we tired and made a few mistakes in the closing stages of the game, there is a chance that we could join that elite. I bet if Man Utd had lost today, their fans wouldn't have gone straight on to the fan sites berating Ferguson and his team, because they know one blip does not make a season.
It takes more than a good team, a good manager and a good chairman to be successful. It takes committed supportive fans to make it work. So perhaps you could all try and remember that next time things don't go our way or you don't agree with a decision or an action. Reserve your judgement until the end of the season and until then, zip it, find the positives and get behind the team.
Remember In Adkins we Trust? I do and if you don't, go and watch the Skates instead, it would do us all a favour.

I think the problem was threefold:
1. The bench. It was a bit unbalanced. As others have said, no Shaw or Chappers. Either might have been a help at the end.
2. All three substitutions were made more or less at the same time. Maybe too much disruption all at once.
3. Given what was available on the bench, NA's choices were a surprise to me (and others). I was ready for Lee to go and run his socks off and the United defence ragged.
But, as you say, plenty of positives and we should all be glad NA's in charge. He's certainly doing a far better job than any of us would.

I too was expecting to see Tadanari at the end of the game, before it kicked off, but that was based on us needing a goal, which we didn't, we were ahead.
I honestly don't see what was wrong with the subs. In theory, yes, they could have needed to settle, but our team is based on players being good enough off of the bench. We did have plenty of attack ourselves and two corners in the last five minutes, post substitutions, so it wasn't all bad? And that If we'd scored from one of those, it would have been game over.

Just like the Wigan game I think we'll struggle against sides who set their stall out to defend and counter attack but we'll get more joy, if we tighten up at the back, against the sides who come at us more (city and utd).
Regardless it's gonna be a interesting season and I hope we continue to be positive, pass the ball around and start picking up some points. Coyr!

I could see the lads getting tired. Was not frustrated with the substitutions. Was frustrated with the departure from strategy. They stopped moving the ball forward and started poorly attempting to clear the ball. They had United beaten on 3 occasions today.
Am behind NA all the way.

Fox played well today! He kept Valencia wide and stopped him cutting inside and getting into the box. He also didn't allow him to cross very much. What more do you moaners expect?
I agree the substitutions didn't work out, but that was because the midfield and defence didn't get the ball to them. I doubt that Rickie, Lallana or Puncheon would have been more effective without the ball. That said, everyone was knackered at the end. They had played their hearts out.

Lambert was perfect until he tired and I think NA was right in sub him. Not sure about Lallana and Puncheon. J-Rod was the substitute for RL, not Mayuka, who could have replaced Puncheon and give some runs against tired defenders.
Our midfielders were outstanding, particularly Spiderman. Saints "Man of the Match" IMO. But they got tired and we didn't have another one on the bench. Guly was the only "midfielder" on the bench but he never would do the same job that Spiderman and Davies were doing. This was a huge mistake by NA. Chaplow could be there.
Our defence: Fox is deffo our weak link there. If someone has a chance to watch again Man U second goal, Fox is doing nothing, marking nobody! Very weak! And I think this was one of the best matches Fonte played lately, considering the opposition, for 75-80 minutes, but then switched off, again! Costly at this level!
Yes, Super Kelvin saved a penalty that he started with his risky distribution. Still unsure; Paulo Gazzaniga needs some matches to prove he can do it. And I think he can!

A lot of my fellow Saints fans posting on here make me ashamed to be classed in the same bracket with you. Your narrow vision and selective viewing from today's game is appalling. We were superb today. It was obvious that Unitied were going to throw the kitchen sink at us in the last few mins and I can see what Nige was thinking with the subs. Unfortunately, it just let United come on to us and Fonte was very slow to attack the ball at the last corner for VP's last goal. Without Lambert there was really no one to hold the ball. Vidic and Ferdinand were worried about Lambert all game whereas the young Zambian didn't have the strength against them. Shame but the lads did us proud. Where 4 mins extra time came from I can't imagine.

i have and have always had concerns about NA's tactical ability. This goes back to when he first arrived. Over the years he has made some strange decisions. However he has done a great job at the club and I am happy to give him the benefit of the doubt. At this level though, make no mistake the clock is ticking.
One thing that isnt acceptable for me is tired players as some posters have mentioned. This is a problem that we had last time we were in the premiership. We were giving games up in the last 5/10 minutes. That was until Gordon Strachan arrived and made them so fit that we always looked like the stronger team at the end of the games. I would be worried if subs were made on that basis.
Hoping my opinion doesnt mean I have to go and support the Skates now !!!

Our midfield and forwards were immense, until the fore mentioned substitutions, but our defence with the exception of Clyne was and has been poor this season. Now I’m certain Fonte and Fox give 100% for us every game, but they lack the quality required at this level. Fox is our Achilles’ heel defensively, I would say 80% of the oppositions’ threat so far has come on our left side where Fox continually goes walk about or gets sucked into a center-half position, leaving so much space to be exploited. With time and space, quality wingers will put quality deliveries into our box, which also exposes Fonte’s slow reactive style of defending. NA is “bemoaning” the late defending, which has seen us concede 4 goals in the last 5 minutes (including the Stevenage game). I hope Yoshida makes a difference in the center of defence, but the unresolved issue on the left side of defence will remain a huge problem… unless Ramirez plays on the left and gives the opposition such a hard time that Fox doesn’t need to defend… here’s hoping eh. Also, when will Kelvin learn to decide how and when to pass the ball out to his fullbacks, his distribution is not great at the best of times, but it was shocking yesterday, could easily have cost us a couple of goals!
Defensive issues aside, we have a team that could easily finish in the top half. When we go forward we’re going to give every team in the Prem a problem this season. No need to panic yet, 35 games to go, plenty of time to rack up wins and point!

Adkins is right in that both he and the players will have learned a lot from that. Winning in injury time is something United have done for many years, but where 4 minutes injury time came from I don't know.

One of the best forms of defence is attack whilst keeping control of the ball in any team ball game.
whilst keeping on the front three Man U were worried & we looked okay for the very least a draw so why with a weak defender like Fonte did he take of our attackers to bring on speed boys to break out of defence?
It's okay if you have good defenders but I can't understand why he didn't strengthen the defence is he converting Lambert?

Mayuka wasn't holding the ball up, and the team weren't playing it into the channels for him to chase down, but they only met him a few days ago.
Defensively, we just got tired and ragged, we all know Fonte isn't quite up to prem standard, but we have his replacement ready to join up with the team before the Arsenal game.
These four games were always going to be a learning curve, we have played superbly, apart from controlling a game in the latter stages. That's our lesson. But Utd have been scoring late goals against clubs or years, and City have done the same more recently.
Get all of our players available, get passed these four games, and the season starts properly for us against villa at home.
Let's have some faith as fans, we are playing some brilliant football, the results WILL come!!

I find the cynicism do Adkins incredible, he made the right tactical changes but the players on the pitch didn't manage to do the job he asked of them.
J-Rod wasn't winning much in the air as was mis-timing his jumps.

Agree with NA the 3 players had worked there socks off , but the
Problem with taking Ricky off is he is good defensively from corners, would of liked to of seen us throw an extra midfielder on to nullify scholes who came on to pull the strings , spiderman was awesome today but all starting eleven did there bit , those guly fonte and fox detractors give it a rest every goal we concede they get blamed, Yoshida will give us an option and young shaw is going to be a good player, NA will decide when the time is right for them to play, well done puncheon his attitude and displays have surprised me but hats off to him for knuckling down cos he too has not been a crowd favourite !!

1. The bench. If it's true that Shaw fell ill on Friday, then fine, but where was Chappers? The bench was unbalanced and, love him though I may, that is NA's responsibility.
2. The subs were all made in a 4 minute period. Too many changes too quickly. It stank of desperation. I agree the important substitution was Scholes rather than our three but we could have spaced ours out so as the disruption was not as acute.
3. Given what was available, it's hard to understand why a player who has just arrived, hardly knows his team mates' names and whose team mates hardly know came on rather than Lee.
So, it's fair for people to question NA's judgment regarding this match.
As for questioning his overall ability or thinking that he should be sacked, heavens! His selections and substitutions at City were pure genius.

I think the subs where the right idea but he had the wrong players on the bench, The games was calling out for energy and chappers and Lee was what we needed. Not Guly and J-Rod.
But we must stick behind the team and the manager! the fans were excellent yesterday proud to be saint today.

We can say that if the substitutions were not made then we would have won the game. Possibly.
But we could also say that if the subs weren't made then either Ricky and/or Adam could have got injured and be out for a long period of time and Nigel should have took them off earlier.
We could say that if Ricky had stayed on the field he would have picked up this player or that player and stopped a goal.
But we could also say that Jay Rod might have latched onto a long ball, whipped it into Mayuka who with pace goes past the defender and slots the ball into the back of the net to take it to 3-1 and kill the game off. And we would be talking about another inspired substitution by Nigel Atkins, tactical genius.
Ultimately, the substitutions were made. We defended poorly, RVP took his chances, and we lost against a world class team but our lads gave a fine display and again showed that while we have much to learn we are able to hold our own against some of the best teams in the world and not roll-over.
Well-played lads. Keep playing like that and we will be at least mid-table by the end of the season.

A lot of my fellow Saints fans posting on here make me ashamed to be classed in the same bracket with you. Your narrow vision and selective viewing from today's game is appalling.

I hope he has plans to borrow a good defender soon

Do you think we could learn a lesson from United? Whatever the problems with the marking, for their winner, if my eyes saw it correctly, I 'liked' (sic) the way a player ran to where RVP was being marked by JWP, then took JWP away, leaving RVP unmarked. It was a bit like the Skate's equaliser at their shed last year.
Both ends need work, but we're getting there.

Adkins is right in that both he and the players will have learned a lot from that. Winning in injury time is something United have done for many years, but where 4 minutes injury time came from I don't know.StHuey wrote: A lot of my fellow Saints fans posting on here make me ashamed to be classed in the same bracket with you. During our stay in the premier league though we will run across other strikers that on their day, are as good as RVP; and we will have to learn how to deal with them. One way is to cut off their supply, No matter how good a striker is....if he does nt get the service, he'll struggle. I'm sure NA told them this , but on three occasions Fox allowed their wide man Valencia too much space, allowing him to get his cross in under no pressure. I think another point NA should look at, is that giving away a corner should be regarded as a LAST resort, rather than a easy option. We don't defend corners too well really, by conceeding them we just invite more pressure on ourselves. Still, early days, confident results will come, and Saints will climb the league...without HR back; shame to disturb him from his new hobby!!.
