Ramirez set for Saints debut?
Saints could unleash the most expensively assembled side in the club’s history for their first trip to the Emirates Stadium tomorrow.
£12m man Gaston Ramirez is available for his first game for the club, as is Japan international Maya Yoshida , signed for £2m, while Emmanuel Mayuka is also hoping for a first start since his £3.5m move.
Nigel Adkins suddenly has a host of options, and decisions to make ahead of the game at Arsenal.
With Ramirez and Yoshida having only reported to the club for the first time yesterday after travelling back from international games in South America and Japan respectively, it could be too big an ask for them to start.
However, Adkins has promised to assess them carefully over the next 24 hours in order to decide if they are ready to start or take a place on the bench.
“They’ve been to different parts of the world and different time zones they’ve had to go through and some haven’t arrived back until Thursday,” he said.
“So it’s a case of checking out where everybody is, what they’ve gone and done and where they physically are in preparation for a great game at Arsenal.
“It’s his (Yoshida’s) first day in the building with us on Thursday, the same as Gaston.
“To get ready for a game on Saturday is a challenge and having not trained with their teammates before and not met them is a challenge as well, but it’s one we’re embracing.”
Saints are aiming for a first Premier League win of the season when they take on the Gunners tomorrow.
Adkins is hopeful that the lessons they have learned from a first three games which have seen them win plenty of plaudits but no points will stand them in good stead.
“The challenge is getting a team ready for the Barclay’s Premier League and that’s what we’ve embraced,” said Adkins.

Davis, Clyne, Yoshida, Jos, Fox, Morgan, Davis, Gaston, Lallana, Puncheon, Lambert.
Gazza, Richardson, Fonte, Chaplow, Ward-Prowse, Mayuka, Lee.
I've been really impressed with Puncheon this season, I think he deserves his starting place. Gaston and Yoshida are good enough to be thrown into any team so there's no reason for them not to be starting. Guly has been dropped in my opinion, he's had chances to shine this season but he never delivers.
Our team is looking pretty **** good!! :D

The whole defence needs to do their job, not just Fonte! But I agree, Yoshida is worthy a start, ahead of him probably.

Possible Starting 11?

I'd start with him and IF he is subbed late on then hopefully it won't start a rush to the defence that happened against ManU.
Shaw should feature - pehaps at the start with Fox carrying an 'injury'.
Either way I am looking forward to the game big time. Won't be 'gutted' if we get beat but something tells me we are gonna start our season tomorrow!

I think it's good to play out from the back sometimes as it shows we want to play football and try and keep possession but KD doesn't instill confidence in anyone. He makes some great saves but if we don't sort our defence, he's gonna have a hell of a pummelling from the PL forwards this season!!

e'll-score-five and it was ace. I think we're going to be doing a lot of that this year. It'll be nail-biting but it will be exciting and, above all, it will be value for money.
Just so long as Nigel doesn't have a nervous breakdown on air and start going "I would LOVE it, LOVE it..." then it'll all be amazing. Enjoy.

I think RL will start because Arsenal will think he won't.
Personally I wouldn't start with Ramirez or Yoshida. I travel to China 3 times a year and jet lag is horrible. Saps your energy.
Ward Prowes should start I think but really not sure on Shaw. If the centre of the defence was more secure Fox is fine.

Seriously, take your point though, probably a bit risky playing Yoshida and expecting him to gell with whoever (probably Hoolveld, but both CHs have looked out of sorts so far). But ramirez must play, just give him the ball and let him get on with it.

He did look good in his opening game from what I remember, but sadly it didn’t work out.
Interestingly about Ramirez, and I did point you all to a BBC podcast on this about a month ago, Vickery who is an impartial Brit in Brazil said the following (I paraphrase):
He has a lethal left foot and will score us plenty of goals from set plays.
He is a tall lad and will cause opponents discomfort in the final third.
He is not use to the speed of the premiership and will find this confronting.
He is a young player that flashes both brilliance but at the same time can go missing when the team is on the back foot.
I don’t think he will be tracking back Nigel

I am over 35 (was 36 in august) and I've never heard Pompey called scummers. The history of the dockyard dispute made us the scum I thought. In fact SCUM was a nickname given to us by virtue of the dockyard group 'Southampton Company Union Men' who would travel to Pompey to work.
We are SCUM and they are Skates. Some think it's skates because of the fish. A fish that is both a bottom feeder and the pleasure fish of randy seamen. My old grandad said they were skates because of how quick they skated from the top flight to the bottom divisions in the early 20th century. I've never looked it up so just enjoy all three versions.
