J-Rod proves his point
10:15pm Tuesday 25th September 2012 in Sport
Jay Rodriguez got himself off and running at Saints with two goals to shoot down Sheffield Wednesday at St Mary’s.
The £7m man was given a rare chance to start as an out and out striker rather than out on the left with Rickie Lambert one of many first team stars rested for the Capital One Cup third round tie.
And he proved his point with a great turn and strike on 30 minutes and a penalty on 78 minutes to bag his first goals for the club since his summer move and book a place in the last 16 for Saints.
Speaking after the 2-0 win, assistant manager Andy Crosby said: “We know that’s where he’s most comfortable and he’s got good competition in front of him at the moment but whenever you get an opportunity you’ve got to take it and he’s done that.
“Whenever he’s needed we know he’s more than ready.”

Jay was lively and put himself around a fair bit and scored a good goal.
Very lucky to score with the pen but they all count.
His body language doesn't look right though, he seems very dejected when things don't work out.
He needs to be patient and use the game time to start to be the player that NA and NC have seen in him.
Yoshida and Jos looked good at the back together.
Gazza in goal made some good saves.
Prowse was saints best player, has all the makings of a being one of the best.
Overall, a fair result.

Gazza in goal wow he is a entertainer.

well done saints
De Ridder was the disappointing one, just kept dribbling till he lost it and very few of his passes found their mark, shame as he has the right attributes but not the right footballing brain, can see why Adkins doesnt want to play him
J Rods penalty was poorly placed but well struck hence why it went it wouldnt say it was s**t though
Hope Corky is okay although didnt look good the way he went down

In the middle of the park Jack Cork, Ward-Prowse and Guly De Prado had things under control. It was the forward line were i felt we could have done better. Steve De ridder, i thought done a lot of running down the wing but very few crosses were delivered to the forward Jay Rod. After saying that though it must be said that Jay took his goal in a true strikers fashion. He controled the pass with very quick feet, swiveled and shot all in one move. The boy is still young and surely has been bought for the future although IMO would be ready to step into R L boots if ever he gets injured. Chappers is no winger and is more effective in the middle breaking forward into the penalty box.
Nigel can feel it was a job well done tonight and none of the players, including the young subs let him down. There will be many changes for the game this Saturday but i would like to see the second half team against Aston Villa starting at Everton . If Leeds can defeat them then this must raise our own expectations for next Saturday. My team woul be
Artur Boruc.
Richardson Fonte Yosida Clyne

Chant of the night....1 nil to the Saints reserves.....1 nil to the Saints reserves.
Highlight of the night.....having Matt Le Tissier sat 2 rows behind us in Itchen North and his reactions to Guly's one on one miss and J-Rods penalty...
Lowlight of the night seeing...Matt Le Tissier queuing up before the game to buy a ticket (fair play to him doing it) I think he deserves to be offered a complimentary ticket for any Saints game, after all, almost single handedly kept us in the top flight of English football for many years, without his goals I believe we wouldn't be at SMS now.
I bet Sir Bobby Charlton has never bought a Man United in his life.

I booked tickets for last nights game the day they went on general sale, it was £15 anywhere. So asked to sit in the Itchen stand, somewhere central. My seat was 184 row B. The first problem I had was when I got to the game turnstile B was closed, there were no signs or stewards stood around explaining why, so I just went through turnstile A. When I walked out into the stand I found I had to squeeze passed loads of people to get to my seat, to then find turnstile B had been comletely taped off and wasn't aloud to sit on the seat I had paid for. I was with 4 mates and we couldn't sit together, I was just pleased I hadn't brought my kids or I would have been thoroughly f%$!*^d off.
Why was I not warned about this before entering the ground?!?! Worst St. Marys experience ever!!!

Nice to see Michael Antonio again happy memories of JTP at Wembley.

just been reading the match report from the sheffield star.In the player ratings they give de ridder an 8 and
ward prowse chaplow and seaborne only a 6 with all the others getting a 7.
their best player was bywater the goalie
who they scored an 8.so we all see things differently at times.
a far as can see it was a good professional performance against a stubborn championship side and we went through.
job done!!

Who do we stick at left back though? Richardson? Shaw? Fox? (I genuinely have no idea and am glad it's not my call.)

On a separate strand, did anybody read that article about how we snatched Boruc away from Everton? Apparently he'd been training with them since last week but they were stalling over a contract. Should we read into this that Everton were not convinced he was up to it perhaps, or something else? Nevertheless, noting that we are playing Everton on Saturday, I wonder if it might be worth starting him as he is sure to want to make a point (or three for us!).

Dave Jones knows how to put a good cup run together.should have won the FA CUP in that match against Porpisemouth with Cardiff..And remember when he was managing Stockport County when they came to the Dell in the 90's as underdogs and beat the Saints. That performance helped him in the long run get the managers position at the Dell.Plus of course he brought with him to Saints from that steady eddy County team Paul Jones and Chris Marsden. Both of whom were terrific servants of the club.Last round his Owls put out Fulham and lots of the so called pundits in the sewer press were tipping his Sheffield club to pitch Saints out of the competition.
Those same boss eyed journalists are now concocting stories that Milan Mandarat will sack Jones and replace him with one harry ratknapp.
cant see it myself i think that our own south coast version of the artful dodger has more chance to end up playing drums for chas and dave than link up with fellow jammy dodger milan again..good old arry everybodys favourite cheeky chappie cockney chum joining up with those well known spurs fans chas and dave.they could even let him sing the old Don Partridge song ROSIE.

I must agree with over the edge.
I can't believe that Mattie, bearing in mind his unsurpassed contribution to the Saints and the fact that he is now a very influential presenter with Sky Sports, hasn't been given a life time free pass in to St Mary's.
Maybe NC hasn't forgiven him for mounting a Saints takeover.
Short sightedness on NC's part? --- wouldn't be the first time.
Is there ANYTHING positive you would like to say about the man and what he has done for Saints?

It is also clear that, despite his liking for long words, he is actually an extremely inarticulate buffoon. His posts read like those a schoolboy who is pretending to be an adult. He pulls all sorts of words out of the air, often in a completely inappropriate context, in the hope that they add some element of gravitas to his comment.
It is clear his words add no value in these threads. Ignore him and do not quote his posts as it only gives them more space.

I think I speak for the vast majority of Saints' fans who, like me, had the privilege of watching him, would deny Mattie free entry in to St Mary's.
I think NC is petty and small minded to allow Le God to queue and pay for a ticket.

What does that have to do with your posts? They are universally negative diatribes that merely betray your prejudices rather than any degree of "superior intellect".
You may see this as "abuse" or "slagging off" as I don't agree with you.
Instead just remember that if everyone else seems to be out of step with you there may be another, much more likely, explanation, namely that you're the one out of step.

Given our loyal service, we all deserve to be treated fairly by the club.
I don't think the club has got everything right (it seems to be pants at selling tickets right now) but I do like the fact that the money I (occasionally) stump up to watch a match at SMS isn't going to subsidise those, like Matt, who can not only afford their own ticket but a dozen more for their mates.
Of course, what the club could introduce is a scheme through which the price of a ticket is proportionate to the purchaser's intellect.
A wise sage like Confucious would, for example, have to fork out several hundred, while the likes of you and Bill would only have to pay a couple of quid each.
Me? I'd be a freebie, of course.
Oh, and Tebourba? Naturally, what he'd pay per ticket could have saved our friends in Southsea.

It's given me some of the best days of my life and, likewise, some of the worst.
I've sat at matches thinking this was money wasted and I've watched moments which have justified the entrance fee on their own.
On balance, it's a rollercoaster ride I wouldn't have missed for the world but it's one I've been loyally committed to at (like us all) some considerable expense.
So, it's been a sort of 'contract'. I pay, I get something back; the club and I, we're even.
Matt did his job and a bl00dy fine job he did. No, he didn't keep Saints up single-handedly as some suggest; other players did a fine job alongside him. For that job, he signed a contract and was paid.
Can you show me the bit in his contract which says his brilliant (and loyal) service will be rewarded with any amount of free tickets to any match he chooses? His reward is our gratitude and the respect we all have for him. There are many other former players (and current ones) for whom I feel the same.

If true it is a terrible shame, great ambassador for not only saints but football in general. Loyalty is being phased out of the dictionary.
Both are being paid extremely well and will have to go a long way to reach the echelon that le tiss has.
Adkins has proved his quality granted but le tiss done that for over 13 seasons.

....................
........so?

It's a no brainer.
I can't honestly believe I have got to make a case for le god!!!! Unbelievable (didn't he have a video of his goals with that title, watch it and jog your memory)
He could have played at a lower level and took the money.
I am genuinely gobsmacked. You truly believe that there is not room for le tiss and guest in hospitality?

It is just my opinion that some one who has played only for saints, been selected for England whilst playing for saints, shunned other maybe more attractive clubs, entertained us, made us proud of, attracted other supporters to us, and captained us etc etc should be given hospitality for all home games.
Maybe more boxes, tickets in hospitality would be sold on the back of getting the chance of exchanging views with him?

Personally, I wish I'd seen MLT in the queue. I would gladly have bought his ticket for him as it would be the least I could do considering all the loyalty he showed to the club and therefore me through the years.
I think some players should get free hospitality , regardless of whether they can afford it or not as thats not really the issue. I think it should depend on length of service and based accordingly.
The reason. We are Southampton. We are family and family is not just about now. Its about the past the present and the future. Our long serving legends should be honoured. For me its simply a matter of respect

My point is, for all of us, it's in our blood, wherever we find ourselves and it's something we 'do' without expecting to be paid or getting favours.
I've huge respect for the antipodean Saints who wake in the night to tune in.
I'd love NC to call me and say, 'you're a top fan, have a couple of tickets for the next match'. BUT, there are thousands of far more devoted fans and loyal players than me and, as Slugger says, where do you draw the line. Furthermore, while I understand your point about respect and rewarding loyalty, someone has to pay for any freebies that are handed out and most ex-players aren't short of a bob or two. Would I buy Matt a ticket as a thank you? No. He can afford it more than me. (Heck! He could use the betting money he made from THAT throw-in!) But, I'd offer him a beer if the opportunity arose and, no matter what faux pas he has made in the past, he will always have my respect and gratitude.
If anything, given that many ex-players support good causes, maybe give ALL former players and managers (okay, maybe not Ali Dia or 'Arry) the right to ask for ONE PAIR of free tickets per season which, rather than for their own use, they can allocate to a 'worthy' person connected with their good cause.
That would be a 'thank you' freebie I’d be happy to support.

As I see it, you have issues with NC and NA over a side matter, as a loyal supporter, you should be asking whether the Club is and has recently been run successfully, not whether individuals from the past are to be given some sort of priviledged treatment. When NC took charge it was apparent that the Club was being sucked dry by a large number of hangers-on, money that should have been invested in the future was going down the Corporate drain. So NC made a decision to cut all of the sponging out across the board. That included him buying his own tickets for games e.t.c. No exceptions were allowed, hence the Le Tissier situation. We all respect and love our past heroes, but the line had to be drawn somewhere. You may not have been aware of the situation as the Club makes a point of not washing its dirty linen in public, but it was discussed early doors of the administration. Yes, I agree our heroes like Le God and Mick Channon et. al. should be given something in respect for what they have done in the past, for the moment it will not happen, unless there is a change of heart. This should not be the cause of a personal hate campaign because individuals don't like it. You could try writing an articulate letter to the Club asking for their reasons and making it clear how you feel, you might get a reasonable response, ranting about on here where you won't get any answers is not the way to go, think about it.

ghk is a fool (imo)
Le tiss, Paine and channon when wanting to attend should be put into hospitality. What next existing players not selected in squad to pay too!
It's sad times if he, channon and Paine didn't all receive this treatment...... Imho
Do I appear like some one who is remotely bothered if my opinions are agreed with? It's a debate, I forwarded my view without insult.
I've always been shot down on here, if it was a concern would I return?
I don't bleat, others do that...... Bhaaaaa ;D
Can the last 1 in shut the gate, if you feel anything touching your ar5e don't panic it's just gayietty's nose
