Matty Tew has been “training like an animal” to try to secure a £32,000 payday.

The Southampton fighter is taking part in the Prize Fighter welterweights in London on Saturday, an action packed event that sees one fighter win through three contests in one evening to be crowned champion and take the impressive cheque.

The format of three rounds of three minutes seems a perfect fit and the ideal way for Tew to bounce back after a first professional defeat in his last outing.

He said: “It’s a great opportunity and with the doors that open up.

“I’m confident I can go on and do very well and get to where I want to be – where I should have been before this fight.

“It’s very big.

“I am training like an animal at the moment – it means everything to me.

“It will be the biggest stage I’ve been on and I will put everything into it and fight every time like it’s my last time and go for it.

“It suits me down to the ground. It’s the perfect opportunity for me.

“I can’t wait for it.”

Tew has been smarting from his defeat last time out and is desperate to puts things right.

“It was very disappointing. I was winning the first three rounds easily but just took a stupid shot – but that’s boxing for you,” he reflected.

“I’ve learnt so much from that one fight compared to all the rest that hopefully I will go on from there.

“In boxing you can be winning for three rounds, have a little look and get caught with a stupid shot.

“I got back up but the ref jumped in. It was a big learning curve but I learnt a lot.

“You have to keep your hands up tight all the time and I’ve been working a lot in the gym and little side steps.

“It’s been perfect for the Prize Fighter.

“I am a come-forward sort of fighter so it’s perfect really.

“I’m not really a boxer but come forward.

“I like to get in the mix so it’s good for me and the fans too.”

Tew insists he will ignore the £2,000 bonus for every knockout on the night and just do everything he can to get through against Ryan Taylor (7-1-1), Liam Shinkwin (6-0-1), Tony Owen(14-1) Chris Evangelou (9-2), Danny Connor (8-5-1), Eren Arif (3-0) and Charlie Rice (6-0).

“You can’t just go looking for the knockout – if it comes in the fight and I see the opportunity I will try and take it,” he said.

“Otherwise I will stick to my boxing and see how it goes from there.

“I know a little bit about a few of them but I’m not really worried about them to tell the truth.

“I will stick to my boxing and let them worry about me.

“If you start worrying about other people you can come unstuck.

“The best thing to do is to stick to your own boxing.

“Hopefully I can do really well in this and then look at the big fights – Southern Area, English and maybe the British one.”
