James Hayward has his sights trained on a Southern Electric Premier League and t20 Cup double for South Wilts after leading the Salisbury club to Ageas Bowl glory in midweek.

He hammered a remarkable 130 off just 50 balls as South Wilts lifted the Southern Electric Cup with an emphatic 71-run floodlit win over Burridge.

Now Hayward, whose side has qualified for the ECB t20 play-offs at Beckenham on August 11, wants more of the same – with a second consecutive Premier Division title top of his agenda.

“I think I’m right in saying that only Havant have won the double before, but the opportunity is now there for us,” he said. “It was terrific lifting that trophy three days ago. A special moment for all of us and now we want to build on it.”

South Wilts, with a 28-point lead over Ventnor at the top of the table, face lowly St Cross Symondians at Bemerton tomorrow brimming with confidence.

Although Bournemouth and Totton & Eling held them to draws earlier this month, Havant have taken a vice-like grip of the title race with important wins over Ventnor and Havant, their nearest rivals.

“We’ve got a pretty impressive record in Time cricket, with four pennants in the past five years and, provided we don’t lose tomorrow, we’ll have another ‘flag’ for the trophy cabinet.

But the newly crowned Southern Electric t20 champions may need to tread cautiously when St Cross journey across Pepperbox Hill.

Richard Logan has named a powerful side – one that could easily repeat last season’s Adam Rouse inspired victory if the champions are not on their game.

With Academy opener Wilf Marriott and Durham University’s Rory Cox bolstering their armoury, St Cross boast an awesome batting line-up, on paper.

Logan reckons he might not bat any higher than number eight tomorrow.

“Rousey got a stunning 161 at South Wilts last season and if one of the top order can do something similar, we might just cause an upset,” Logan said.

Despite their strength on paper, St Cross are finding it hard to put any wins together – and haven’t won since they beat Ventnor in the second week of the season.

“We’ve almost won our last two games, but haven’t been able to bowl the opposition out,” he mused.
