HAMPSHIRE'S Dimitri Mascarenhas has won a call-up to England's new-look one-day squad for the series against the West Indies.

The 29-year-old all-rounder, who featured in a crucial partnership with Nic Pothas in the Friends Provident Trophy sem-final on Wednesday, has been knocking on the door of the one-day team for years and at last has his chance.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: "Dimitri enjoys an excellent record in the shorter form of the game, has shown that he can take wickets on different types of surfaces and is also an effective hitter in the lower order."

Mascarenhas's inclusion means he will only play the first two games of the Hawks' Twenty20 Cup matches, against the Kent Spitfires tonight and against the Surrey Lions at the Brit Oval on Sunday.

The Hampshire beneficiary was named as captain for the Hawks' Twenty20 campaign but will miss the last six group matches.

Mascarenhas could return for Hampshire's next Championship match, against Warwickshire at the Rose Bowl on July 8, but Nic Pothas is likely to replace him as Hawks captain for the remainder of the Twenty20 Cup.

Hampshire manager Paul Terry said: "There's been a lot of talk about whether Dimi should play for England over the last few years and with the new regime taking over with new ideas there was always a chance he would be included.

"Everyone knows what Dimi can do and this is a great opportunity for him to do it at the next level.

"He brings a lot of enthusiasm to every team he has played for, for Melville, Bournemouth and Hampshire and I'm sure he'll become a firm favourite with England if he does well because he'll play with a smile on his face."

England play two Twenty20 internationals on June 28 and 29 before three one-day internationals on July 1,4 and 7.

If Mascarenhas impresses, he may well be involved when England play India at the Rose Bowl under floodlights on August 21.
