Heavy rain washed out the opening day of the LV County Championship Division Two match between Hampshire and unbeaten Derbyshire at the Rose Bowl.
As pools of water formed on the outfield, lunch was taken early but the rain continued to fall against the backdrop of a gloomy forecast and play was called off at 1.10pm.
Derbyshire, with two wins and two draws behind them, came south looking to extend their fine start to the Championship season.
Hampshire, without yet naming their line-up, were expecting captain Jimmy Adams to return after missing the last two championship matches because of personal problems.
In addition, left arm pace bowler James Tomlinson was due to be recalled for his first appearance of the season after recovering from injury.
Former England pace bowler Kabir Ali, also fit again after an ankle injury, was in the squad along with left arm spinner Danny Briggs, who missed the last two matches because pitches have been favouring seam bowlers.
