Hampshire prospect Sean Terry hit a superb century before Bashley (Rydal) repelled a determined Havant fight back to claim a narrow seven-run victory at the BCG.

The two sides, who tied an epic Southern Electric t20 Cup final under the Ageas Bowl floodlights last season, produced another high quality encounter which hung in the balance until the end.

Terry, pictured below, was in fine form, hitting two sixes and 12 fours in his 117 – his 92-run third-wicket partnership with Richard Morris (48) providing the base from which Bashley were able to post a competitive 244-7 in 50 overs.

He survived one chance on 64, when Havant’s Stuart Ransley floored a regulation catch at deep mid-wicket.

Terry cashed in and went on to almost double his individual score and, with support from Simon Watkins (22) and Dan Friedman (23), guide Bashley to a winning total.

Havant’s containing spin ensured the visitors would not have to chase at five an over from the outset, but they didn’t make the best of starts and, with Watkins (4-40) taking two wickets on off-spin debut, were on the back foot at 61-3, with Pete Hopson, Ben Walker and Ransley all back in the pavilion.

Havant’s prospects brightened considerably while former Hampshire Academy duo Chris Stone (68) and Rob Gibson (55) were at the crease and the tide turned as the pair lifted the visitors’ reply to 158-3.

But when they both parted in consecutive overs, Bashley regained the initiative to leave Havant a testing 101 to win off the last 18 overs.

The asking rate later became eight an over – a statistic Havant were unable to maintain, despite the efforts of Richard Hindley (37), who became Watkins’ fourth victim in the 48th over.

Havant battled on gamely, but they finished seven runs adrift at 237-8.
