Lewis McManus flew back from an intense England under-19 batting camp in Sri Lanka to pick up the John Millett Memorial Trophy for the Southern Electric Premier League’s Young Cricketer of the Year at the league’s presentation dinner.

McManus, who hopes to be in the England squad for the 2014 ICC Under-19 CWC in the UAE, hit two centuries and three scores of 50 or more on his way to 628 Premier Division runs for the Hampshire Academy.

He also won the Premier Division wicket-keeping award, with 26 victims behind the stumps for the Young Royals.

McManus described his ten-day visit to Sri Lanka under the tutelage of England Performance development head Tim Boon and former Glamorgan captain Matthew Maynard, as “demanding, but rewarding”.

“Predictably, it was hard graft bating and training in hot and humid conditions,” he said.

“We did a lot of fitness work, running shuttles besides net and middle practice, working on shots you can and cannot play on certain surfaces and in certain conditions.

“The pitches in the Emirates, where the ICC Under-19 World Cup is being played next February, will be real turners and we need to be ready for that.”

McManus and left-arm quick Tom Barber, who have both joined Hampshire on development contracts, will fly to Dubai shortly for a tri-series of Under-19 ODIs against the Emirates and Pakistan.

Bashley (Rydal) all-rounder Ryan Higgins, who shone in this summer’s home under-19 internationals against Bangladesh and Pakistan, is also in the England party.
