AFC TOTTON manager Steve Riley has had better days.
While the Stags were by no means outclassed at unbeaten promotion favourites Leamington on Saturday, in many ways they were the architects of their 2-1 Southern Premier Division downfall.
Having the normally reliable Mike Gosney miss a penalty at 1-0 down did nothing to enhance their prospects and neither did the poor defending that gifted second-placed Leamington their 66th-minute winner.
The final straw came on 70 minutes when Jonathan Davies sabotaged any prospect of a fightback when he was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge.
“The ball was going out for a throw and Jono didn’t have to slide in like he did and catch the bloke on the back,” said Riley. “There was no need for it and it left us down to ten men and facing an uphill battle.”
