SUPER-sub Jess Walklin scored with his first touch as Sholing beat an AFC Totton side, including the re-signed Mike Gosney, 2-1.

Gosney, back with Totton on a month's loan from Gosport Borough, played most of the match on the left flank.

But it was a winger at the beginning of his career who scored the crucial first goal.

Within a minute of replacing Tobi Adekunle, who had only been on for 20 minutes in place of the injured Nick Watts, Walklin fired in the crisply-struck opener on the hour.

Walklin’s first touch found the bottom of the far corner after Dan Mason had crossed from the right.

And in the 75th minute Barry Mason secured all three points when he powered in a near-post header from Kevin Brewster’s corner.

Totton were given an 87th-minute lifeline when defender Stuart Mott - in his first game back at Sholing since leaving earlier this season – was brought down in the penalty area.

Craig Feeney made no mistake from the spot, sending Lee Webber the wrong way for his 15th goal of the season.

Cue a tense finale.

Totton left-back Andrew Bridge twice went close from distance and with the final kick of the match substitute Ellis White fired over a glorious chance to equalise following Kyle O’Brien’s free-kick.

Nathaniel Sherborne twice went close at the beginning of the first half, firing over the bar and then hitting it, while strike partner Feeney sent a cushioned volley just beyond the far post.

But Sholing deserved the three points.

Dan Mason had a volley well saved by Steve Mowthorpe and had another chance to open the scoring after brother Byron had seized on a slip by former teammate Mott.

Byron Mason missed a golden chance of his own just before half-time, a one-on-one with Mowthorpe who saved well before Adekunle’s follow-up shot was blocked.

Despite the missed opportunities, Sholing returned to winning ways thanks to two goals in the last half-hour in front of a season’s best Silverlake Arena crowd of 309.
