Eastleigh were well beaten 3-0 by an incisive Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday in the Vanarama Conference.

In a poor Spitfires display the Welsh side were 2-0 ahead within 30 minutes through Elliott Durrell and Wes York and, a miserable afternoon was complete on 70 minutes when substitute Andy Bishop knocked home from close range.

Eastleigh’s best effort saw Jai Reason thunder a 25-yard free kick against the bar when his side was 2-0 down.

It was a difficult first half for the away side. They failed to hold down much possession and looked shaky at the back.

The energetic Wrexham attack of Connor Jennings, York, Louis Moult and Durrell caused havoc from balls knocked over Spitfires backline.

Early indication of how busy the away side’s afternoon would be, saw Moult fire in an enticing low cross after some good link up with Durrell and, on 11 minutes, Evans and Spitfires keeper Ross Flitney had to be alert to ensure York didn’t slot home after breaking through one-on-one.

Without Jamie Turley, who won man of the match in 1-0 victory over Braintree last weekend, Eastleigh’s back four looked vulnerable.

Michael Green, back in the side after suffering from glandular fever, was far from on his game and on 12 minutes failed to cut out a cross field ball that found Durrell. The dinky winger, darted off his right wing and broke into the box. His shot deflected off Reid past a wrong footed Flitney 1-0.

And on 27 minutes Wrexham doubled their advantage. The Dragons had made life very difficult for Eastleigh all over the pitch. The midfield couldn’t get the ball down and possession was limited with The Reds pressing well.

A Moult cross from the right skimmed off the head of captain Reid and found York at the back post. Flitney charged out but the forward had already controlled. He snuck his shot under the experienced stopper.

Things just didn’t flow for Eastleigh. The best of the half for the away side saw Jamie Collins call Reds keeper Dan Bachmann into a rare bit of action by flicking a header from a Jai Reason free kick. James Constable also flashed a header at him. Both incidents he dealt with well.

Richard Hill’s side came out with more vigour after the restart and the boss was clearly planning changes with Craig McAllister, Chris Todd and Craig Stanley all warming up.

Stanley and McAllister were introduced with 23 minutes left for Strevens and Constable respectively after a 20-minute spell where Eastleigh had started to find their feet.

Bachmann was pulled into a good save as Reason’s flicked free kick was headed at goal by Collins on 58 minutes. And, just past the hour mark, Reason thundered a 25-yard free kick against the bar.

Some good build-up play resulted in Collins firing well over the bar from range.

But the resurgence came too late and, against the run of play, Wrexham completed the resounding victory. Substitute Bishop latched on to a Jennings square ball that he bundled into the net on 70 minutes.

Late on, Reason curled an effort at goal, but Bachmann was alert and held well.
