Eoin Morgan will captain an experimental England Lions team to face Australia in a two-day game at Northampton later this week.

Eoin Morgan will lead a side that includes three Lions debutants - Keith Barker, Luke Wells and rookie Alex Lees - and no players with any obvious claims for a place in the fifth Investec Test.

England's selectors have therefore resisted the chance to test fringe players ahead of the final Ashes Test, which begins at the Kia Oval on August 21.

Morgan led England's Twenty20 side against New Zealand earlier this summer and will be joined by three other members of that squad.

Jos Buttler, Gary Balance and Ben Stokes are included while Lancashire's slow left-arm Simon Kerrigan earns a call-up after his impressive season.

National selector Geoff Miller confirmed the squad - which does not include players due to play in the Friends Life t20 finals day the same weekend - had been named to reward county form.

Kerrigan has claimed 47 wickets in the LV= County Championships this season - the most by any spinner - and could come into contention as a second spinner behind Graeme Swann ahead of the return Ashes series in Australia this winter.

"We have looked to reward the players from the county circuit who have performed well this season and will look to push for places in future England squads with this fixture," he said.

"With the t20 finals day running over the weekend of this fixture, we have been unable to select from any of the sides involved in that competition for obvious reasons, plus there are a number of other domestic fixtures that run very closely to this Lions game, so for practical reasons we had to recognise that a number of Counties' players were unavailable.

"As is always the case with these fixtures, they are an excellent marker for judging the level of these players at a very high international standard and we look forward to seeing the team perform strongly against the Australian opposition."

The England Lions have stepped in to play in Australia's final tour game after Northamptonshire secured their place at finals day at Edgbaston.
