ENGLAND

JOE HART: Under-pressure keeper was England's man of the match. Three top saves. 8.

KYLE WALKER: Poor crossing but made a couple of important tackles. 6.

CHRIS SMALLING: Cool under pressure early on but at fault for the goal. 5.

PHIL JAGIELKA: Good challenge on Lars Bender to deny Germany early on. Faded therafter but not as bad as Smalling. 6.

ASHLEY COLE: Almost teed up Rooney for a goal, but looked off the pace at the back. 5.

STEVEN GERRARD: Wayward long-range shot summed up how much he has deteriorated since 2001 when he scored from similar range. Did his best to turn defence into attack, though. 6 TOM CLEVERLEY: Scrapped, but offered little in attack. 5.

ADAM LALLANA: Encouraging again. 6 ANDROS TOWNSEND: England's biggest threat. Hit post in second half. 7.

WAYNE ROONEY: Worked as hard as ever, but unable to test German goalkeeper. 6.

DANIEL STURRIDGE: Will his partnership with Rooney ever work? Failed again at fourth attempt tonight. 5.

Substitutes: KIERAN GIBBS (on for Cole, 52mins): Gave more energy down left flank. 6.

JORDAN HENDERSON (on for Gerrard, 54mins): Muted response to his introduction said it all. 5.

JACK WILSHERE (on for Cleverley 63mins): Arrival was hailed by home fans, but still clearly not match-fit. 5.

ROSS BARKLEY (on for Rooney 71mins): Could barely get on the ball as the Germans held on to it well. 5.

RICKIE LAMBERT (on for Lallana 75mins): Needed more time. 5.

GERMANY

ROMAN WEIDENFELLER: Could have brought a deckchair and put his feet up for his debut. Only moment of concern was when Townsend hit post. 6.

MARCEL SCHMELZER: Looked vulnerable against Townsend and deserved to come off at half-time. 5.

HEIKO WESTERMANN: Could have scored early on with a header and played well on the attack. 6.

PER MERTESACKER: Captain Marvel. Blocked Lallana when through and scored top-drawer header. Clearly enjoying his football this season. 9.

JEROME BOATENG: Looked more solid at centre-half than his dodgy days at full-back for Manchester City. 7.

LARS BENDER: Protected defence well with his brother. 7.

SVEN BENDER: Performed superbly and also filled in well at full-back. 8.

TONI KROOS: Incredibly dangerous and skillful with the ball in midfield. England could do with a player like him. 8.

MARCO REUS: Another threat from midfield who caused England problems on the break. 7.

MARIO GOTZE: A real nightmare for England. Quick feet, good skills, perfect balance. One to watch out for at the World Cup. 9.

MAX KRUSE: Proved he is capable of leading the line for Germany in Brazil. 7.

Substitutes: MARCELL JANSEN (on for Schmelzer, 45mins): Much more adept at dealing with Townsend. 7.

MATS HUMMELS (on for Boateng, 45mins): Only lasted 20 minutes before coming off through injury. 6.

SIDNEY SAM (on for Kruse, 56mins): Looked a more than decent backup. 7.

BENEDIKT HOWEDES (on for Hummels, 66mins): Did well after England launched a late attempt to get back into the game. 6 JULIAN DRAXLER (on for Westermann, 66mins): Schalke man showed off his skills during limited time on pitch. 6.

ANDRE SCHURRLE (on for Reus, 81mins): Chelsea man had little time to impress. 5.
