Otterbourne manager Richard Luffman was mightily pleased to see Fleetlands win on Tuesday night.

Luffman had been racked with guilt after his team demolished Kev Wrapson’s Fleetlands side 17-0 on Saturday in the Hampshire Premier League Senior Division.

Wrapson was so “humiliated and embarrassed” by the defeat that he offered his resignation at a committee meeting after the match, which was turned down.

The Otters boss apologised to Wrapson post-match for the defeat that saw his side set a new club and league record for the biggest victory.

Although Luffman’s outfit went top of the county top-flight last night with a 2-1 win at champions Hamble Club, thanks to goals from debutant Chris Mason – the former Winchester star – and Steven Hall, they were just as pleased to see Fleetlands bounce back with all three points.

“I apologised to their manager and secretary after Saturday,” explained Luffman. “Usually when you get to six, seven or even ten goals up, you can start to take the foot off the accelerator.

“But many of our players had one eye on impressing ahead of the crunch match with Hamble, so didn’t want to stop performing.

“We’ve also got big ambitions this season, so the goal-difference could well help when it comes down to get ahead of the like of Hamble and Baffins.

“Still you never want to do that to a team, really. Fleetlands are a well run club and when they won on Tuesday we were all happy that that happened.”

Fleetlands hit-back with a 3-0 win over Colden Common at Lederle Lane. Jordan Whiteley scored twice, with Brad Snelling hitting the other.

Their conquerors on Saturday, Otters, fell behind on 24 minutes against Hamble, when ex-Sholing player Dan Cox fired the league holders into the lead.

However, James Thomson – another former Boatmen had seen red moments into the clash – and, in a “ferocious battle” between two of the league’s big guns, Otterbourne ground out victory.

Mason, who made the switch from Winchester City due because of work commitments restricting his time to play in the Southern League, hit first on 38 minutes before Hall got the winner just after the break. Baffins Milton Rovers kept their winning start going in a dramatic victory over Headley.

Ollie Watts fired last term’s runners-up into a 58th minutes lead before Dan Gray levelled with 20 minutes left.

Shane Cornish then struck from the penalty spot for the Portsmouth side to retake the lead with ten to go. Headley then got a spot-kick of their own just two minutes later, with Matt Rayner dispatching it.

Cornish then netted his second with just four minutes of normal time remaining to record Baffins’ fourth win in as many matches.

Meanwhile, Sam Floyd scored twice as Infinity beat Clanfield 2-1 while Winchester Castle were defeat 2-0 by Bush Hill, with Jack Jewell and Tom Mason on target.

Stockbridge won 2-0 against Overton United while Liphook drew 2-2 with Paulsgrove.
