Paul Jewell believes Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp "ticks all the boxes" to be the next England manager.

Jewell, looking for a return to management after being out of the game since leaving Wigan in May, has backed the 60-year-old to succeed Steve McClaren after he was sacked yesterday for failing to secure qualification for Euro 2008.

So far only former Saints boss Redknapp and former AC Milan and Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello have not ruled themselves out of the running for the England job when asked.

Jewell said: "I would give it to Harry Redknapp. He has got a fantastic way with players, he gets people playing for him, he knows the game, he's played and he's English.

"He ticks all the boxes, he would definitely have the respect of the players and he has managed in the Premier League.

"It's unfortunate that English coaches never seem to get a mention, and someone like Harry has been around for a long time, more than served his apprenticeship.

"I don't think it would be so much of a gamble."

Jewell insists the FA should seek advice from club managers in making their appointment, adding: "I see the people on the FA committee quite regularly when I'm down there on those disciplinary meetings and some of the people making the decision on the England manager I don't think are qualified to."
