FAREHAM Town’s 2-0 FA Vase win over Fawley AFC was marred by a serious injury to their young defender Matt Page.

Club captain Ian Humble is arranging a collection for the youngster who suffered kidney damage during the first qualifying round tie at Cams Alders.

A club statement confirmed: “Matt suffered a stage four severe tear and rupture to his left kidney which will see him bedridden for at least six weeks, let alone consider returning to training and playing football once more.

“Matt is a student and any supporters attending tonight’s (Sydenhams Premier) game at Hamworthy United are welcome to give what they can afford.

“There will be a bucket collection around Cams at our next home league game on September 20 against Brockenhurst. We wish Matt a speedy recovery.”

Fawley ’keeper Joe Prodomo had also been in the wars with concussion, but showed no ill effects on his return to action, keeping the scoreline blank at half-time with decent saves from Mark Wheeler and Liam Robinson.

Fareham eventually took the lead on the hour when Jordan Neal blasted home from the right side of the area.

Wayne Boud hit the Fawley woodwork with a free-kick and it wasn’t until the 90th minute that sub Liam Bradbury made the game safe for the hosts, tapping into the empty net after his initial effort had been blocked.

Fareham, who handed a debut to new attacking signing Simon Woods from Portchester, went close again when Wheeler’s drive crashed off the bar.

The Creeksiders – who have, in turn, lost popular goalkeeper Luke Douglas to Portchester – are at home again in the second qualifying round against in-form Wessex rivals Petersfield.
