Winchester City manager Paul Masters can see room for improvement in his free-scoring side’s performances, despite beating Fawley 5-0 at the Denplan City Ground in the Sydenhams Premier Division on Saturday.

Masters hailed the dominant display against the Oilers but, having overseen a number of resounding victories in recent weeks, he is still looking for more from his team.

The win was dedicated to assistant manager Glenn Burnett’s father, Malcolm, who lost his battle with cancer last week.

Burnett’s dad closely followed his son’s football career and it seemed right to dedicate the 5-0 win to his memory.

“It was a scrappy first half but we grew into the game,” Masters said. “We’re getting goals from all over the pitch – that’s a really good thing.

“We wanted to dedicate the match to Glenn’s father, Malcolm, because he followed his son’s career very closely.”

Title favourites City are now starting to hit the level many expected of them at the beginning of the season, having won four consecutive games and scoring 21 goals in the process, including a 7-1 demolishing of Brockenhurst.

It was the second time in that run that Winch had thrashed the Oilers, after they beat them 4-0 in league cup at the end of October.

In this particular goal-glut, the prolific Warren Bentley netted a brace to take his tally to more than 25 goals already this term.

Chris Mason, Mike McEnery and Scott Sampson completed the rout against a Fawley side who sit 17th in the division.

While Masters’ side have hit good form since he took over from Tim Cole and Danny Robinson in October, the boss admits there still are improvements to be made as City aim to chase down the Wessex Premier’s leaders.

“There’s a long way to go,” said Masters.

“We’ve got a good bunch of lads here and there are still things for them to work on.

“One of those things has to be consistency.”

City are now up to sixth in the Wessex and are eight points off top-side Moneyfields with two games in hand.

Winchester will travel to United Services Portsmouth tonight in the Sydenhams League Cup (7.45pm).
