Blackfield & Langley manager John Robson hailed his team’s excellent FA Vase second round performance and is hoping lady luck will favour them as they look to progress in the competition.

The Watersiders beat Sydenhams Premier Division rivals Bemerton Heath Harlequins 3-0 at Gang Warily on Saturday with two second-half goals from youngster Jesse Gould and an opener from Ekow Elliott.

The B&L boss was pleased with his side’s showing but is remaining calm about their Vase ambitions.

“It was a great performance from start to finish,” Robson said. “We did some good work on Thursday in training and we were excellent.

“They lashed it forward to their big men up front but we played our own game – we started with a 4-5-1 and broke into a 4-3-3 formation.

He went on: “What I’d like the players to realise is that we’re five games from Wembley.

“But luck plays a massive part.

“A bit of luck and have the lads fit then you never know.

“The squad is capable, they’re good enough, but we are quietly confident.”

The competition now pits them against Wiltshire side Highworth Town in the third round, who are currently eighth in the Hellenic Premier Division.

Robson earmarked the knockout competition as one of his priorities this term, along with the Wessex Premier title, but the experienced manager won’t be getting carried away.

“It would be lovely to think we could go all the way, and you can sit there and dream but you have to remain quietly confident and get that bit of luck.

“Yes the squad is good enough but we don’t want to get carried away here.”

Elliott opened the scoring with eight minutes to go in the first half. The former Poole Town attacker’s long range free-kick looped past every one in the box and bounced into the net.

Gould got his first of the day on 67 minutes as he burst into the box and slammed home from three yards.

He completed his brace and secured the victory with an outstanding effort with moments left on the clock. Danny Young delivered the ball into the box and it came back to Gould to impressively volley home.

To cap a good day for the Watersiders, two debutants – striker Mark Ford and goalkeeper Scott O’Rourke – made a good impression.

Ford signed from Weymouth recently and reminded Robson, the former Winchester City boss, of Ex-Eastleigh and City forward Andy Forbes, who Robson tried but failed to sign in the summer.

Now, it seems, he’s got the striker he was hunting for.

“Mark was excellent on Saturday,” he said.

“He was good on the deck and he had a couple of chances and showed a really good awareness.

“I can tell he’s going to get better and better.

“He reminds me of Andy Forbes when I signed him in 2004 for Winchester.

“Ford is exactly the same... he’s great in the air and has the same stature as Forbesy.

“They’re the same style of players.”

Blackfield are back in action tomorrow night when they face Whitchurch United in the league cup.
