DAN Munday struck his fifth goal in three games to help keep Blackfield & Langley third in the Sydenhams Premier Division.

The former Poole Town and Verwood striker has started the season in a rich vein of form and joined Sam Lanahan on Saturday's scoresheet.

But assistant boss Chris Farrell felt the contribution at the other end of the pitch was every bit as important in the Watersiders' 2-0 home win over Whitchurch United.

“Dan’s done quite well, but we were able to play our strongest back four and that was the cornerstone of our victory,” said Farrell.

“Danny Phillips is a dangerous customer up front for Whitchurch, but Joe Byrne and Sam Poole marked him out of the game and totally nullified the threat.

“That was the platform for the whole side to play well.

“For me, Joe and Sam are the best central defensive partnership in the league. I wouldn’t swap them for anyone.”

Blackfield are back in league action tomorrow (Wednesday), away to a Brockenhurst side defeated 4-2 at Cowes Sports on Saturday.

The Badgers led 2-0, but were eclipsed by goals from Jordan Browne, Nathan Lewis, John McKie and Charlie Smeeton as the newly-promoted Yachtsmen hit back for their first league win of the season.

“Need to manage games better from 2-0 up after 20 mins!” tweeted disappointed Brock boss Pat McManus.

New Fareham Town manager Steve Stone took charge of his first game since returning from holiday – and found himself on the end of a 3-1 home defeat by Andover Town.

Callum Laycock netted a first-half leveller for the Creeksiders after Elliot Ward had given Andover a 19th-minute lead from Danilo Cadete’s cross.

Ex-AFC Totton midfielder James Jennings headed home Lewis Benson’s 51st-minute free-kick to restore the visitors’ advantage and Sam Pekun made sure of the points.

Stone reflected: “We seemed to be back in the game at the start of the second half and created a couple of good chances. Then a couple of individual mistakes cost us a couple of goals.

“Andover deserved the win. They have some good players, pace in key areas and took their chances well.”
