EMERGING sharpshooter Joe Wood netted twice as Verwood put an end to Lymington Town’s Sydenhams League Cup hopes at Potterne Park.

Wood struck a goal in each half to help the Potters to a comfortable 3-0 second round victory.

The big striker opened the scoring in the seventh minute and Verwood doubled their lead five minutes into the second period when Charlie Gajic claimed the final touch amid a goalmouth scramble.

Wood, a former Fawley AFC marksman, wrapped up victory with nine minutes remaining, taking his season’s tally to 12.

Lymington return to knockout action tomorrow (Tuesday) at home to Southern One Central outfit Fleet Town in the Russell Cotes Cup second round.

Another of Wood’s old clubs Christchurch exited the SWL Cup in heartbreaking fashion, losing to a late extra-time winner at Amesbury Town.

The all-Sydenhams One clash finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and it was in-form marksman Danny Finnigan who plundered the Blues’ decider with the aid of a deflection.

Amesbury had five players booked in a feisty encounter. That came on top of six yellow cards picked up in their 3-2 league win at Totton & Eling four days earlier.

The club’s own match report admitted: “This needs addressing as suspensions will jeopardise their chances of winning trophies this season.”

Romsey Town also went through after extra-time, coming back from behind to see off Sydenhams One rivals Hythe & Dibden 3-1 at the Bypass Ground.

Hythe played the last 15 minutes and the whole of extra-time with ten men. Having used all three subs, they lost Sam McCarthy to a knee injury.

Premier Division outfit Cowes Sports proved too strong for Div One New Milton who bowed out 4-1 at Fawcett's Field.

The Isle of Wight visitors - away to Gosport Borough in the Russell Cotes Cup tomorow (Tuesday) - netted through Charlie Smeeton (2), Ed Sanders and Aidan Sainsbury. Sub Shane Sheridan bagged the Linnets' consolation.
