TO say the Southampton Senior Cup final between holders Team Solent and Blackfield & Langley is hard to call would be an understatement.

The pair have squared up four times already this season and honours are even with two wins apiece ahead of tomorrow's St Mary’s Stadium showpiece (Wednesday, 7.30pm).

Both won their respective home games in the Sydenhams Premier Division, Blackfield triumphed 4-3 away in the FA Cup and Solent exacted revenge with a 1-0 League Cup success at Gang Warily.

Blackfield have the edge in the league, still on course to finish second to Salisbury, but James Taylor’s sixth-placed Southampton Solent University side have got stronger as the season’s unravelled.

Forget about last night's 4-0 home defeat by Cowes Sports. With games still coming thick and fast after another wet winter, Taylor gave skipper Jesse Waller-Lassen & Co. a rest to keep them fresh for the final.

“We had to take that one on the chin,” said the Team Solent boss. “Tomorrow’s a big game for us. It would be fantastic to win the cup two years in a row."

Just getting to the final again is an achievement in itself because, unlike last year when Solent were still in Sydenhams One, Wessex top-flight clubs have been allowed into the competition for 2015/16.

“Getting here two years running is something we didn’t think we could do but, now we’re here, we’ve got to try and put it all together,” said Taylor. “We know Blackfield well, they’re a physically strong, athletic side and we’re going to have to be at our best to beat them.”

Both teams should be near full strength with just Jim Orvis (ski-ing trip) absent for Solent, while Blackfield forward Dan Cann is struggling with a calf problem.

All the Watersiders' other injury/illness problems are now behind them with B&L's assistant manager Chris Farrell relieved to report: “Tomorrow will be the first time we can name five subs for as long as I can remember.

“We're looking forward to it, it’s not every day players get to play at a Premier League ground.

“Solent have surprised a few since coming up (as Sydenhams One champions), but they didn’t surprise us. We knew they’d got good players.

"Both teams like to play football, so it should be an entertaining game, and I’d imagine the St Mary’s pitch is as good as it gets.

“Salisbury will be worthy Wessex champions, but the bottom line for us is that winning a trophy and finishing second would be an acceptable return for the season.

“I don’t feel we’ve done ourselves justice in any game against Solent so far. Hopefully we'll do ourselves proud tomorrow and come away with the pot."

Entry to St Mary's is £10 adults and £5 concessions.
